RICHARD STEIN Obituary

STEIN--Richard, MD. It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Richard Stein, MD. Dr. Stein, a leading nephrologist with an extensive list of accomplishments in patient care, research, and education for more than half a century at Mount Sinai, passed away on Sunday, June 26. He had served as Chair of the Ethics Committee at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai since 1994 and as Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine for more than two decades. He led the Division of Renal Disease (now the Division of Nephrology) from 1989 to 1994. Over the years, he not only taught countless students to be physicians and researchers of the first order, but instilled in them the importance that care should be delivered equitably and with compassion. He had a particular interest in curriculum development and was passionate about teaching and enforcing ethics. Mount Sinai has lost a cherished colleague, a dedicated scientist, an exceptional educator, and a lifelong friend to many. Dr. Stein loved Mount Sinai and he leaves behind an extraordinary legacy that will live on for decades to come. We express our deepest condolences to the Stein family--including his wife, Ellen, three children, and 11 grandchildren--and ask that you keep them in your thoughts during this difficult time. Charney, MD, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Dean, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai; President for Academic Affairs, Mount Sinai Health System Monica Kraft, MD System Chair, Department of Medicine Murray M.
