Dick was born on August 6, 1936, at home in Fenton, Michigan, to Vernon D. Thatcher and Edith M. Thatcher. In 1950, he moved with his family to Coral, Michigan, where he lived until entering the United States Air Force in 1955. He proudly served his country as an Airman Third Class Mechanic until his honorable discharge in 1958. In 1959, Dick met and married the love of his life, Sonja. Together they made their home in Modesto, California, where they raised their three sons. Dick worked as an Insurance Broker for more than 50 years, building lasting relationships with clients and colleagues throughout his long career. Dick enjoyed spending his free time boating, fishing, and watching sports. He valued time with family and friends and was known for his steady presence and kind nature. After the passing of his beloved wife, Dick returned to Michigan to live with his sister in Coral, where she lovingly cared for him until his peaceful passing. Dick was deeply loved by his family and many friends, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his sister, LaVerna Smith; his sons, Dale (Boo)Thatcher and Andy (Shirley) Thatcher; his granddaughter, Chantelle Thatcher; his grandson, David Thatcher; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon D. Thatcher and Edith M. Thatcher; his sister, Patricia A. Burns; and his son, Dan Thatcher.
Dick’s family is planning a Memorial Service, to take place on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at 4:00 p.m., at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 16028 Isabella Rd., Coral, MI 49322.
