Richard Sherm Thompson, age 77, husband of Beverly “Bev” Thompson, of McDowell, passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at Augusta Health in Fishersville.

He was born June 7, 1945 in Hanover, NH, a son of the late Sherm John and Genette Genevea (Cheney) Thompson.

A faithful Christian, Richard was a member of Hiner Church of the Brethren and former member of McDowell Presbyterian Church, where he would often attend. Retired from Perdue with over 35 years of service, he soon thereafter relocated to Highland County. A selfless person, Richard will be remembered for his countless acts of kindness within the community helping the elderly, as well as those in need. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed trout fishing, bowhunting for deer, turkey and dove hunting. During the winter he enjoyed hours spent watching “Gun Smoke.” Above all he will be remembered for the love he had for his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bruce Thompson; sisters, Darlene Johnson, Janice Hudson and Lorraine Arehart.

Surviving family members, in addition to his wife include daughters, Sarah Thompson of Waynesboro, Melissa Thompson Ryan of Waynesboro; sons, Richard “Teddy” Theodore Thompson and wife, Loretta of Waynesboro, Patrick Alan Kunc and Michael James Kunc; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brothers, Aron Kindrick Thompson of Stuarts Draft and Wayne Harris Thompson of Staunton; special friends, Rebecca McNeil and husband, Marvin and Marshall Faircloth, all of Jacksonville, Fla.; numeroud nieces and nephews; as well as his beloved three-legged cat, Tripod.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, April 8, 2023 at Obaugh Funeral Home with pastor Jeff Fike officiating.

Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hiner Church of the Brethren, c/o Charles Varner, treasurer, 6527 Highland Turnpike, McDowell, Va. 24458.
