Rick Anderson Obituary

Rick Anderson departed this world on Aug. 24, 2025. He was 58.

Rick was born on Feb. 6, 1967, a cold snowy day in Wilkes County, to Anganetta Dover. His mother said she prayed for a son who would love people and who people would love back for a godly persona and caring spirit. To her delight, God granted that request. He is preceded by his grandparents, Vera & Roby Johnson, his stepfather, Wayne Edwin Dover, and his partner, Scott McCombs.

Throughout his life, Rick never met a stranger. He made everyone feel good about themselves. With witty charm, Rick could pull a smile from a frown and get a laugh out of anybody.

Over 30 years at Sidewalk Deli, his second home, Rick turned patrons into family. He did not just learn people's go-to orders. He wanted to know about people, about their families and about their lives. He always asked how you were doing because he truly wanted to know.

If Rick loved something more than his work at Sidewalk, it was his faithful sidekick, Rex, a Yorkie he was frequently spotted around town with. Walking Rex through Bell Tower Green was not a chore for Rick but a blessing. He would regularly remark what a gem it was to have a park like that in downtown Salisbury, but to Rick, the entire town was a gem. He loved Salisbury and Salisbury loved him back.

He made a life here, from his days at Catawba College, where he embodied the small-town spirit, to hosting foreign delegates from Salisbury's sister city with his partner Scott McCombs.

A faithful servant of the Lord, Rick sought to bring others to Christ even from a young age. His hand would shoot up during Bible study, eager to ask or answer questions about Jesus.

When folks think of Rick, they will always remember his smile and his unmistakable laugh. If Rick were still alive, he'd say that is exactly how he wanted to be remembered. Well, that, as well as the most fashionable person you ever knew.

Rick may have left his earthly body behind, but he is in the arms of his savior now watching over the town he loved. However he is not completely gone. He leaves behind a legacy of love, and as a little reminder, he sent his friend of 40 years, Jason Williams a note this week. A chance encounter on a plane bound for Baltimore put Jason next to a man, who upon learning that he was from Salisbury, remarked about a deli there he loved and its owner that he loved even more.

That was just Rick though. He never met a stranger.

A celebration of life will be held for Rick at the Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on the campus of Catawba College, September 2 at 2 p.m. Reception to follow at the Crystal Lounge. Guests are encouraged to wear bright colors.

Earlier today

I met Rick at The Vocational Workshop now know as Rowan Vocational Opportunities. Rick was a counselor there. Still with that wonderful hear of gold. He poured into the clients making them laugh and listening to their stories everyday. When he opened his deli it was THE place to go with my granddaughter. Who at 2 LOVED the fish. Definitely an angel watching over Salisbury
