Rick Newby of Miles City, Montana, passed away peacefully at his home on the evening of August 3, 2025. He was 75 years old.
Born in Miles City on July 6, 1950, Rick was the second child and first son of Stella M. (Glaim) and David Dale Newby. A lifelong resident of Miles City, Rick spent his youth fishing, playing football, racing cars, and participating in Boy Scouts. After graduating from Custer County District High School, he served in the U.S. Army from 1970–1973, including an 18-month tour in Vietnam, followed by service at Fort Riley, Kansas.
Upon returning home, Rick dedicated over two decades to law enforcement with the Miles City Police Department (1974–1998), then served with the Custer County Sheriff's Department as a reservist (1998–2024) and as a pro tem judge.
Rick was a devoted animal lover, passionate outdoorsman, and avid collector. In 2017, he fulfilled a lifelong dream of owning a Corvette. Later in life, his faith deepened, and he found peace as a member of Intersect Bible Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Stella; his siblings Darla Kay and Terrance John; and several cherished dogs.
Rick is survived by his former wives, Roseanne Newby and Terri Schmitz; his children: Jeffrey (Michelle) Newby of Milton-Freewater, OR; Richard (Kristin) Newby of Helena, MT; Candace Newby of Miles City, MT; and Dennis (Ashley) Bohlman of Billings, MT. He is also survived by his grandchildren Carrie Jo, Declan, Aisling, Caitlin, and Roslynn; great-grandson Ryder; sister Christine (Jeff) Gregory; and nieces Kate and Jessica.
Arrangements are under the care of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on August 8, 2025, at Stevenson & Sons, followed by burial at Eastern Montana State Veterans Cemetery and a luncheon at the VFW.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Custer County Fund for Animals, 519 Main St, Suite 104, Miles City, MT 59301.
