Rickey Benton Lindsey, Sr., of Covington, ran into the arms of Jesus on Thursday, October 30, 2025 at Baptist Hospital - Desoto after bravely fighting esophageal cancer and pneumonia complications. He was 73 years old.
Rickey was born on October 6, 1952 in Corinth, MS. His family moved to the Liberty community in Tipton County shortly thereafter. He and his two brothers and sister spent their growing years roaming the family farm using their imagination instead of toys and baseball as an energy outlet. Without a doubt, he was the biggest NY Yankees fan ever, especially admiring Mickey Mantle. This devotion to the Yankees was inherited by his three children, which made him very happy. Any activity was scheduled around Yankee baseball and U of M basketball game times. He will forever be remembered for his birthday dances, Beatles music serenades, driveway cookouts, guitar pickin', lunchbox "napkin notes", blackboard poetry and much more.
He attended Holmes School and Byars-Hall High School in Covington where he graduated in 1970. He worked (entertaining co-workers at the same time) at Warwick Electronics, later choosing to join his father in the family trade of plaster and concrete work. Later opportunities brought him to work in banking at First State Bank and Tri-County Federal Savings & Loan, then into vehicle financing at various car dealerships and finally maintenance positions with several housing developments. Every phase of his work life brought life-long friends and memories while shaping his relationships and respect for God's children in all walks of life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, R. B. and Helen Lindsey; his brothers, Kenneth and Bobby Lindsey and his nephew, Mark Lindsey. He is survived by his bride of 51 years, Nan Witherington Lindsey and the greatest blessings of his life - his children, Benton Lindsey (Abbie) of Covington, Kate Cook (John) of Clarendon, AR and Tyler Lindsey (Hannah) of Collierville. He also leaves eight grandchildren, Jack Lindsey, Luke Lindsey, William Lindsey, Drew Cook, MacConnell Cook, Lindsey Cook, Anderson Cook and George Lindsey. He also leaves his sister, Brenda Smith of Ootlewah, TH and many nieces and nephews who were all much-loved.
Visitation will be held in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church in Covington on Saturday, November 1 from 10 a.m. until 12 noon. A memorial service will be held immediately afterward beginning at 12 noon.
In lieu of flowers, the family would love for you to consider a donation to either the Educational Building Fund at the First United Methodist Church, Covington (home to Methodist Preparatory School) or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
