Rita Witt Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A. - Cumberland on Feb. 17, 2026.
Corriganville, MD- Rita Joyce Witt passed away in the early morning hours of February 14, 2026. She was born on February 15, 1940 in Sand Patch PA to Robert and Eva Courtney. Following the untimely death of her mother, she was raised by her beloved step-mother Helen Courtney. She was also preceded in death by three of her brothers, Dean Ohler, Ken Ohler and Bob Courtney, as well as her former son-in-law William Stratton.

Rita is survived by her husband of 64yrs, Jon Witt and two daughters Janice Robinson (Jerry) and Karen Brown (Justin). Five grandchildren Kaitlin McKenzie (Corey), Brady Robinson (Ryan), Griffin Robinson, Ella Robinson and Lauren Stratton. One brother, Tom Courtney and multiple nieces and nephews.

Rita was a 1958 graduate of Meyersdale High School, where she was elected as Class of 1957-1958 "Miss Varsity". Following her high school graduation she enrolled in Catherman's Business School in Cumberland, MD. Upon graduation from business school, she was employed as a secretary to Meyersdale school system. After her September 10, 1961 wedding to Jon, the couple moved to Cumberland. But before starting her own family she was briefly employed by McCroy's department store.

After her own children were raised, she continued nurturing children by providing sitting services for neighborhood families

Rita was a 50+ year member of the Ellerslie United Methodist Church. She served several decades as a third grade Sunday School teacher and Women's Society member. She also spent countless summers as a vacation Bible school volunteer, not only as a teacher but also as chauffeur to all neighborhood kids so that they could attend the week-long activities.

But she found her greatest joy as mother and especially as grandmother. She could always be found early to any competition, sporting event, theatrical play or dancing recital involving her grandchildren.

She was loved, she will be remembered and she will be missed.

Friends will be received at Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD (www.adamsfamilyfuneralhome.com) on Thursday, February 19, 2026 from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. A funeral service will begin at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Angel Frye officiating.

Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
