Robert John Ahrens

1924 - 2024

Robert John Ahrens, known affectionately as Bob, passed away on May 2, 2024, in his home in Belmont, California. Born on July 5, 1924 in Osgood, Ohio he was the son of the late Edward Ahrens and Pauline Zimmerman. Bob was a cherished member of the Belmont Community, where he lived for most of his life.

Robert graduated from St. Johns High school in Maria Stein, Ohio. He proudly served in the Airforce from 1942 until 1946. He flew various aircrafts including the B-24. He joined United Airlines in Los Angeles in 1946. He received his commercial pilot certification in 1951. His later years at United he was a service area operations manager. He retired from SFO at the age of 60.

He dedicated 30 year of volunteering at the Belmont senior center and served over 67,500 lunches. He also faithfully volunteered at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. He was married to his beloved wife, Opal Virginia Ahrens for 65 years. They enjoyed traveling the world and collecting passport stamps. He also had a love for photography .Together they had Five children: James Ahrens, Robert Ahrens, Thomas Ahrens, Christena (Ahrens) Courchaine and Merilou Ahrens. He has 7 grandchildren: Laura Cody, Shalaina Courchaine, James Ahrens, Cory Lagomarsino, Robert Mahood, Dan Mahood and Christopher Mahood. He has 5 great-grandchildren: Jaxon Gonzalez, Jaslene Gonzalez, Katelyn Mahood, Relighmae Mahood and Thomas Mahood.

Robert was a devoted husband, father and grandfather to his family. A service to honor Robert's life will be held on May 21, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at IHM church, 1040 Alameda de las Pulgas, Belmont, Ca.

Robert John Ahrens will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather and friend. His stories, wisdom, and the warmth of his company will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
