Bob graduated from Weston High School with the Class of 1944, and never missed a day of school. He was a proficient typist and could type 120 words per minute on a manual typewriter. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on his 17th birthday and served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII, serving aboard the USS LST-823, and obtaining the rank of Yeoman Second Class. He later served in the U.S. Army Reserve with the 100th Airbourne Division and the 374th Field Artillery Battalion, Battery B, obtaining the rank of Master Sergeant before his honorable discharge. He was a lifetime member of the Buckhannon VFW Post 3663, the Buckhannon American Legion Post 7, and the US LST (Landing Ship, Tank) Association.

In his extensive career with the Postal Service, he missed only 7 sick days.

Bob was a farmer; a traveler, visiting all 50 states, Europe, Canada, South America, Central America, and the Caribbean Islands; an avid camper; a talented dancer of many styles, including the square dance, the polka, and the waltz; a daily Scrabble player; and a commissioned Admiral of the Cherry River Navy.
