Robert Ashcom Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Michigan Memorial Funeral Home, Inc. on Jan. 24, 2024.
ASHCOM, Robert G., age 85, of Riverview, January 23, 2024. Robert was the beloved husband of Joann Ashcom for 63 wonderful years. Loving father of Suzanne (Thomas) Sorovetz, Julia (Peter) Donnelly, and Robert (Lisa) Ashcom. Dearest grandfather of Ashleigh (Peter) Kawinski, Robert (Kate Richardson) Ashcom, Ryan Donnelly, Thomas (Kariann Mengelle) Sorovetz, Austin Donnelly, David Ashcom, and Rachel Donnelly. He is survived by his sister Patricia (Robert) Winston. He is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Edna, and his sister Jacquelyn Crum. Robert led a very interesting and unique life. From everything he accomplished, to what he was interested in. Robert was a proud US Navy Veteran, and was a Naval Officer in 1961 on the USS Saufley, Destroyer 465 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. In 1964 he was honorably discharged from the Navy. After graduating high school, he attended the University of Pittsburgh, and graduated in 1961 with his BBA. From there, he went on and attended his studies in Economics at the University of Detroit with his MBA. After being discharged from the Navy, and completing his studies, he worked for Ford Motor Company in different management positions, and later retired in 1994. Even after retirement, he still went on and worked for Michigan State University from 1995 to 1998 as a consultant. Aside from Robert's studies and work, he and his wife, Joann loved to travel, and has visited Rome many times. He and Joann sang for Pope Benedict, a mass at St. Peter's Basilica and Carnegie Hall in a choir. Robert's hobbies included, hunting, sports, being a member of the Riverview Chapter Knights of Columbus at St. Cyprian and most of all, spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, he was so proud of them. If you knew Robert, you know the love he had for his country, his witty sense of humor, and always giving back to his community, family, and friends when he was able to. Robert will be eternally loved, missed and remembered.
