Robert A. "Bob" Ashworth, 85, of Arlington, passed March 31, 2025, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his family. He was born April 7, 1939, on the family farm north of Macksville, to Myrl K. and Velda I. (Abrams) Ashworth.
Bob graduated from Macksville High School in 1957 and earned his Bachelors and Masters in Industrial Arts Education from Fort Hays State University. He taught Industrial Arts at Nickerson High School for 29 years before he retired.
Bob answered the call to serve his community as both a volunteer firefighter and EMT. He served on the Reno County District 4 Fire Department for 40 years. Bob helped establish the Arlington EMS, becoming one of the first board certified EMTs in the state of Kansas. Additionally, he served on the Nickerson Fire Department and Reno County EMS Reserves.
On August 29, 1965, Bob married Dedria A. Dipman, in Larned. They shared nearly 60 years of marriage and were blessed with two children, Dari and Darin.
Bob was a man of many talents, driving a concrete truck in college and after retiring from teaching. He also worked summers at the Arlington Co-op and assembled farm implements to earn income for his family's treasured summer vacations in their motorhome.
In his spare time, Bob enjoyed gardening, fishing and woodworking. He built his own home and shop, and spent many hours assisting his children and grandchildren with their projects.
Bob loved spending time with his family. He was most proud of his children and grandchildren and would tell you that they were his greatest joy. And, they loved having Grandpa Bob in attendance at their many athletic events and activities. This extraordinary man will be greatly missed by his family, his community and all who knew him.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Dedria; his children, Dari Hilbert (Tom) of Seneca, Darin Ashworth (Emily) of Haven; grandchildren: Maurice Hilbert, Abraham Hilbert, Noah Hilbert, Lorelei Ashworth, Luke Ashworth, Nolan Ashworth; siblings: Janice Murphy, Nancy Douglas, Ronald Ashworth (Retha), all of Larned; and many extended family members.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard Ashworth; and sister, Jeanne Hawk.
He was a member of Larned United Methodist Church and attended Arlington United Methodist Church.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2025, at Elliott Chapel. The service will be livestreamed and can be viewed in his obituary on the funeral home website. Graveside service will follow at Larned Cemetery.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Arlington Community Center, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
