Robert Dixon Atwood Jr.

1944 - 2025

Robert Dixon Atwood Jr. was granted a peaceful release in the comfort of his home on August 4, 2025, after a 10-year battle with cancer. He was lovingly surrounded by each of his children and their spouses. The primary cause of death was being born, however an additional complication was Multiple Myeloma which he bravely fought.

Bob was born February 22, 1944, in Monahans, Texas to Lt. Robert D. Atwood Sr. of Portland, Maine and Aileen Hansen of Dayton, Idaho. He married Gladys Ann Fielding "Annie" of Shelley, Idaho on June 12, 1968, in the Idaho Falls Temple. He was the father of four children: Wendy Lyn Jones (Brian) of Wickenburg, Arizona; Heidi Greenhalgh (Dyrk) of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Jonathan Robert Atwood (Michelle) of Logan, Utah; and Thomas James Atwood (Nikki) of Logan, Utah. He is survived by sixteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, his brother Tom Atwood (Judy) of Mt Vernon, Washington, his sister Anne Dalton (Greg) of Bar Harbor, Maine, as well as many cousins, nephews, and nieces.

Growing up, his family moved 33 times. He lived in England, Salt Lake City, UT, Dayton, ID, Twin Falls, ID, River Heights, UT, and both the East and West coasts. This created a love for travel that took him across Europe, South and Central America, and all 50 states. This was hard for Annie to live with since he always wanted to be somewhere exciting and his sense of adventure occasionally clashed with Annie's desire for the comforts of home, but she was a good sport for 35 years.

Earlier in life Bob and his brother Tom lived with their grandparents, Joe and Ann Hansen, for three years on their farm in Dayton, Idaho while their mother finished her nursing degree. It was a wonderful time and Bob was educated about farm life. Where else could you learn to milk a cow by hand, drive a tractor, and really learn how to work?

Bob graduated from Twin Falls High School in 1962 and enrolled at Utah State that fall. From 1964 to 1966, he served as a missionary in the North British Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. During this time, he gained a lifelong love for the people and history of Great Britain. After graduating from Utah State in 1968, his plans to attend law school were delayed by the Vietnam war. He enlisted in the U.S Army Reserves and served for 13 years. He enrolled at the University of Utah Law School in 1970 and graduated in 1973. Both he and Annie thought Cache Valley would be a great place to live, so they came to Logan in 1973, where he practiced law for over 50 years. He enjoyed his clients and loved being his own boss so he could go on vacation whenever he wanted. They moved to their current home in River Heights in 1977. He held multiple church positions including Scoutmaster, Bishop, High Councilman and Minister. He loved scouting and helped many young men reach the rank of Eagle. He was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, the highest recognition that can be bestowed upon a Scout leader.

His favorite activities involved nature, reading, skiing, running marathons, and watching and listening to birds. He traveled all over the world birdwatching and thanks to him, several children and grandchildren are avid birdwatchers as well. He was a lifetime member of the Cache Valley Audubon Society and received the Allen Stokes Conservation Award in 2019.

Services for Bob will begin Thursday, August 7, 2025 with a closed casket viewing (as per Bob's wishes) from 5:00-6:30 pm at White Pine Funeral Home, 753 S 100 East, Logan, Utah. Funeral services will be held the following day, Friday, August 8, at 11:00 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 800 S 600 E in River Heights. The funeral will be followed by graveside services at the Providence City Cemetery in River Heights.
