Robert was born in 1941 in Mingo, WV, the son of The Late Glenn and Chloe (Kennedy) Blankenship. He was a United States Navy veteran, serving 22 years and a member of the American Legion. He retired after working for 32 years in telecommunications.
He married Carolyn Pruitt Lockette on January 12, 2008 in Natural Bridge, Virginia.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Elena Gaidowski, and his son, James Blankenship and brother, Glenn Tucker Blankenship.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; his daughters: Ivonne Blankenship of Huntsville, AL, Carmen Blankenship of KS, Mildred Blankenship of WV, Chloe Blankenship of Marietta, GA, Donna Spence of Winchester, and Theresa Wever of Winchester; his sons: Luis Blankenship of Huntsville, AL, Joe Blankenship of Huntsville, AL, and Robert D. Blankenship, Jr. of Huntsville, AL; 30 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and his sisters: Billie Jean Simpkins of WV, Fran Keelen of OH, and Katie Dotson of WV; brothers, John, Blankenship of TN, Larry Blankenship of OH, Young Blankenship of VA, Dale Blankenship of KY and David Blankenship of WV.
A service will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at 10:30am at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel.

When David was in the hospital and trusting no one; Bob helped him through the fear and troubles he was having. David trusted no one but Bob, Bob held David hand from 2:00am until 6:00 the next morning. David was ok after that horrible night. Bob was always traveling to check on his siblings. He and David stayed in Tennessee one week to make sure their brother was ok, he traveled from Ga to Huntington for another. He was always there and calling to make sure they were ok. I will miss this special person dearly, I will miss his visits and our conversations on politics. Thank you so much for being a wonderful friend! Give mommy n daddy a hug for me
