Bob was born on July 7, 1964 in Spencer, IA to Dean and Donna (Turnwall) Grey. He was a 1982 graduate of Estherville High School, a 1986 graduate of South Dakota State University, received his master’s degree from the University of Minnesota in 1994, and an Education Administration degree from St Mary’s University in 2004.

On May 24, 1986 he was joined in holy matrimony to the love of his life - Mary Sponheim - at Rock Creek Lutheran Church in Meroa, IA - the best decision he ever made. The two of them were blessed with two children - Tyler on January 27, 1990 and Kiersti on November 18, 1995.

He spent 33 years as an educator at the Montevideo Public School District in Montevideo, MN as a high school math teacher, activities director, elementary principal and coached football, basketball, baseball and track, retiring in August of 2021. His professional passion was activities and teaching students the things that are not learned in a classroom nor written in a book - teamwork, perseverance, integrity, cooperation, sportsmanship, etc. - taking pride in hosting quality events for students and spectators to participate in. During his time as activities director he was very involved with the Minnesota State High School League - serving on the Board of Directors and assisting with the operation of a variety of state tournaments, the (MNIAAA) Minnesota Interscholastic Activities Administrators Association, awarded the State Award of Merit in 2019, the State Activities Director of the Year in 2020, and inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2024, and the MSHSL Region 3A - serving as the Sub-Region 12 Coordinator for a few years and the Executive Secretary from 2020-2025.

He enjoyed playing golf, working on projects in his “barn” and anywhere they came up with an idea, and driving the boat and jet skis. His true passion was spending time with his family - specifically at the lake, and traveling with their children- thoroughly enjoying any time they spent together.

Bob is survived by his wife, Mary; son, Tyler (Abby) Grey of Lakeville, MN; daughter, Kiersti (Bryce) Mamer of Dawson, MN; grandchildren, Elsie and Hudson Grey, and baby girl Mamer due in July; his parents, Dean and Donna Grey of Madison Lake, MN; brother, Brian (Peggy) Grey of St. Peter, MN; sister, Jana Grey of Dysart, IA; sisters-in-law, Joyce Baun of Detroit Lakes, MN, and Ann (Jeff) Fisher of Detroit Lakes, MN; brothers-in-law, Don (Karen) Sponheim of Altoona, IA, and Dean (Cindy) Sponheim of Nora Springs, IA, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and friends.
