Robert “Bob” Holmes, 62, of Oshkosh passed away Wednesday afternoon, November 29, 2023 at the Regional West Garden County Hospital after a battle with ALS.
Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 8, 2023 at the Lewellen Wesleyan Church with Pastor Bruce Neal officiating. Burial in the Ogallala Cemetery will be held at a later date.
The funeral service will be streamed live via the Holechek-Bondegard Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/hbfunerals) and available to watch after the service.
Per Bob’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation at the funeral home.
Memorials in Bob’s name can be made to Regional West Garden County Foundation of ALS research.
Holechek-Bondegard Funeral Home and Cremations in Oshkosh is serving the Holmes family.
Robert was born in Weiser, Idaho and attended grade school and high school there. When he was 18, he joined the Navy and had many exciting experiences visiting the Orient.
After he left the Navy, he had many different jobs and interests. He worked for the cable company, did cooking in several restaurants, but his dad convinced him to be his co-driver with May Trucking. He enjoyed traveling the 48 states and working with his dad.
In 1987, he married and had 2 daughters. While married he moved to Ogallala and within the first year there he got his LPN from Mid-Pains Community College and worked at several nursing homes in the area. After a few years he returned to truck driving with Hinz Trucking.
From 1999 to 2009 was a period of wondering and discovery then he returned to the Good Life in Nebraska and went to work at Regional West Garden County Nursing Home. He was devoted to his work and patients. He kept a bowl of chocolate kisses to brighten the residents’ days.
He loved his daughters and grandsons and shared many holidays together. Non enjoyed living in the country and all 6 of his farm cats.
He will be missed by all his family and friends.
He is survived by his daughters: Sarah (Kyle) Sybrant and Ruth (Eric) Mecham; son, Jason Holmes; 3 grandsons, Leon and Kaleb Sybrant and Cyler Mecham; mother, Valita Johnson; brothers, Jeff and Scott Holmes; sister, Rhonda Cudaback; close friend and companion, Pam Raymer and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his dad, Ronald Holmes and maternal and paternal grandparents.
