Robert "Bob" Jones Obituary

Robert Carey Jones, “Bob”, age 84, of Mountain City, TN, passed away in his home on February 26, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born August 9, 1941, in Anderson, Indiana, Bob was a devoted son to John and Helen Jones and loving husband to Janice Jean Jones, “Jeanie” of 61 years, living the last 12 years of their lives in Mountain City, TN.

Bob attended school in Anderson, IN from kindergarten until high school. As a young boy in the 50’s, Bob was dedicated to many tasks: his weekly paper route, being an Eagle Scout, swimming/lifeguarding, tennis, leading music in his church youth group, and was an accomplished trombone player in his high school marching band. He also played in the orchestra and trombone choir at Bob Jones University, Greenville, SC, where he attended college and met his loving bride, Janice Jean (Mroz) from Seymour, IA. Bob and Jeanie graduated from college and married the same day on May 27, 1964. Bob was a diligent, hard-working, loving husband, dedicated father, fun-loving brother and uncle, and kind friend, who loved the Lord with all His heart and soul. He was saved at Oakwood Park Camp on Lake Wawasee in IN, when he was 13 years old and committed his life to Christ. Bob had a spark of laughter like no other and was very quick-witted enjoying life to the fullest. He pastored two churches in South Carolina, serving in the ministry for more than 50 years. He also faithfully served on staff at Oakwood Baptist Church, Anderson SC as Director of Maintenance and Grounds, while Jeanie served as the school librarian. He also taught a men’s Sunday School class for many years, as well as enjoying driving the bus for Oakwood Christian School basketball and soccer teams to away games during his children’s high school years.

While painting homes and businesses in the Anderson, SC area, he invested his life in people, continuing to do so even in his later years in Mountain City, TN. He also volunteered painting many buildings and homes at the Bill Rice Ranch, Murfreesboro, TN. However, his favorite part of being in the ministry was taking Junior & Teen campers to the Bill Rice Ranch for a week of summer camp. Pastoring, mentoring, and helping young people was a special gift, as he encouraged and pointed others to Christ! He deeply loved Jeanie and his four children, always making family a priority, and enjoyed the times he could spend with his grandchildren, sharing many stories and laughing with them. He was a dedicated, faithful servant of the Lord to the end!

He is survived by his wife, Jeanie, his 4 children and 12 grandchildren; daughter, Julie Potter & Dan of Inman, SC (Benjamin & Gabriel); daughter, Jennifer Roberts & Garrett of Cantonment, FL (Justin, Colby (Taylor), and Braden); son, Daniel Jones & Jessica of Mountain City, TN (Anna, Laura, Caleb, and Titus) and son, Jonathan Jones & Carolyn of Gunnison, CO (Samantha, Elora, and Stephen) as well as extended family members and friends, who will miss him dearly. Bob was preceded in death by his father and mother, John and Helen John, and his sister and brother-in-law, Beverly (Malcolm) Smith.

Celebration of life will be held Sunday, March 1, 2026 at the Mountain City Funeral Home, Mountain City, TN with visitation from 2:00 – 3:00 pm and funeral service at 3:00 pm. Brother Daniel Jones and Pastor Jonathan Jones will be officiating. Interment will follow Monday, March 2, 2026 at the Bill Rice Ranch Memorial Park, Murfreesboro, TN at 4:00 pm. Pallbearers will be Josh Miller, Dan Potter, Benjamin Potter, Gabriel Potter, Garrett Roberts, Colby Roberts, Caleb Jones, and Stephen Jones. Honorary pallbearers are Justin Roberts and Braden Roberts. Family and friends are welcome to attend.

Any memorial donations may be given to the Bill Rice Ranch, 627 Bill Rice Ranch Road, Murfreesboro, TN 37128 in Bob's memory.
