Robert Cantara

ALEXANDRIA, NH - Robert "Bob" Cantara, 86, of Fairview Lane, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, October 20, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Bob was born on August 27, 1939, in Barre, Vermont, the son of Philip and Madlyn (Lock) Cantara. He grew up with a strong work ethic, a generous spirit, and a deep sense of service - values that guided him throughout his life.

Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife of 59 years, Gwendolyn Cantara, whom he married on December 23, 1959. He was also predeceased by his parents, and by his brothers Philip and Richard Cantara.

He is lovingly remembered by his twin sister, Roberta Thibeault of Chichester, NH, and his brother, Alfred "Fred" Cantara of Hill, NH. Bob's greatest pride was his family. He is survived by his children: Christopher Cantara and his wife Karen of Alexandria, NH; Teresa Clark of Swanzey, NH; Stephan Cantara and his wife Robin of Gilsum, NH; and Melody Duquette of Alexandria, NH.

Bob also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren - Andrew Cantara and his wife Marissa, Jayme Cantara, Becky Welch and her husband Corey, Shannon Clark, Justin Cantara, Rebecca Reed, and Robert Duquette IV - as well as seven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Throughout his life, Bob wore many hats, but all reflected his dedication to hard work, community, and family. He served with the Swanzey Police Department, including as Dog Constable, and volunteered with the local Fire Department. Always ready to lend a helping hand, Bob was the kind of neighbor everyone could count on.

He also enjoyed the arts and spent a few wonderful years performing in The Old Homestead play at the Potash Bowl in Swanzey - a local tradition that brought him much joy and laughter.

After moving his family to Alexandria, Bob and his brother Fred opened Cantara's Getty Station and Autobody in Bristol, NH. The business later became Cantara & Sons Auto Body in Alexandria, where Bob proudly worked alongside his son Steve, grandson Robbie, and other family members. His mechanical skills, patience, and love for cars made a lasting impression on everyone he worked with.

From 1993 to 2002, Bob served as a Selectman for the Town of Alexandria, helping guide the community he loved so much.

Bob will be remembered for his humor, kindness, and unwavering devotion to his family. He lived a life full of purpose, laughter, and love - leaving behind a legacy of service and compassion that will live on through those who knew him.

A celebration of Bob's life will be held at a later date.
