Robert (Bob) Vaughn Carter passed away this Monday, November 17th, 2025 at the age of 80 due to a lingering illness he had suffered with for several years. He was born January 2, 1945, in Berkley, California during the closing months of World War II where his father was employed with the Kaiser Naval Warship Industry. He is the eldest son of Eldon Vaughn Carter and Annie LaRee Madsen. He is survived by his children Alaine (Timothy Bline Richards), Dianne (Steven Hal Farrer), Kristin Ann (Ryan Michael Shaw), James Robert (Melanie Jane McFarland), Janise, David Vaughn (Mallory Kundl), 16 grandchildren including two great granddaughters (Riley and Navi Peterson). He is also survived by his sisters and brother, Kathleen (Carl Steven Boyd), Peggy Ann (James Berry Hamilton), James Eldon (Linda Larsen) and Denise (Brent Wayne Smart), and his in-laws Elouise (Ronald George Hunter) and Douglas Vaughn (Mary Fleetwood) Nelson. His parents and in-laws Woodrow Ensign Nelson and Lucy Ann Vaughn preceded him in death.
He graduated from Hillcrest High School (Midvale, Utah) in 1963 and was active in school and church sports. He worked for his grandfather and eventually for his father building custom homes while he studied at the BYU until graduation in 1973. He returned to graduate studies later earning an MBA Degree in 1995 (Accounting emphasis).
His involvement in the construction business taught him how to build a house from start to finish. After graduation from BYU and his father's retirement, he entered the banking business working for 36 years in this industry until he retired. He held various administrative positions and enjoyed working with his subordinates and especially enjoyed working with customers.
He taught night classes at the Utah Valley State College (UVU) for four years as an Adjunct Professor in the College of Accounting. He was also active in other civic organizations as a contributing board member and then Chairman of the UVSC Advisory Board, a Cedar Hills City Planning Commissioner, Rotary Club, and part owner of a proprietary business with a trusted associate developing ESL and other business consulting opportunities.
He was a patriot and had strong feelings for freedom and the American way of life. He served in the US Army Reserve joining in July 1963 before graduating from High School receiving an honorable discharge the month after he and Louise were married.
Because of his early construction experiences, he was an avid woodworker with a unique, custom wood working shop. He also enjoyed gardening growing vegetables and fruits supplementing the food supplies of the family and sharing the produce with neighbors and friends.
He was intently involved in his religious convictions and service supported by his good wife, children and grandchildren. After retirement, he and his wife served as MLS missionaries in Curitiba and Prudentópolis, Brazil; fulltime, live-at-home missionaries in the Family and Church History Headquarters Mission in Salt Lake City where they served as Directors of a new pilot program called the Discovery Center and twice in the Portugal, Lisbon Mission as MLS missionaries serving 31 months in the Azore Islands, also two months in the City of Evora located on the European Continent and Executive Secretary to the Mission Presidency then Counselor in the Azores District Presidency. He and his wife loved serving with the full-time
missionaries. After returning home they served as part-time Service Missionaries mentoring 82 newly called MLS Senior Couple Missionaries through a Power Point presentation in both Portuguese and English.
He served in many positions of leadership and service in his church including Stake Missionary, Elders Quorum Presidency, Counselor to two Bishops, Bishop, Branch President at the Provo, Utah MTC, Ward and Stake Financial Clerk, Stake High Counselor, and Temple ordinance worker.
His love and selfless service to his friends in all his experiences in life have been his unique reputation with unconditional and undaunted love for all.
He met his wife, Louise Nelson, through a mutual friend. They were married June 5, 1969 in the Salt Lake Temple, just five months after their first date. They were happily married 56 years.
His religious and civic activities/responsibilities always came in second place to the love he had for his wife, children, grandchildren and extended family. He and his sons regularly went on backpacking trips with some limited involvement by his wife and daughters. The daddy-daughter dates were also very memorable. Dates with his wife were lovingly regular and fulfilling. There is love and togetherness in the family especially as the children were growing up. Their adult accomplishments have brought much joy and happiness; experiences that hopefully will always be remembered with love and admiration. It has always been his hope for this love and unity to carry into the eternities. Of all his earthly involvements, he cherished most his family and his loving companion Louise.
