Freed from the bonds of the earth and illness, Bob is home with God—October 26, 2010. Robert Dana was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on February 7, 1940 to Julia Keely Dana and J. Arthur Dana. The family moved to Castle Rock, Washington, and Bob spent many happy times fishing for salmon and steelhead, camping, and hiking. He graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle with a B.S. in Physics and an M.S. in Geophysics. In 1967 he married Karen Torrens and in 1969 they moved to Walnut Creek, California where Bob worked at the Pacific Southwest Research Station of the U.S. Forest Service in Berkeley, California. In 1976 the family moved to Fort Collins, Colorado where Bob worked at the Rocky Mountain Research Station. He retired in 2000 after 31 years with the U.S. Forest Service. Bob had many varied interests and especially loved the outdoors, camping, fishing, hiking, and gardening. He was active in helping others through the Social Concerns Committee at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church where he and his wife are members. Other interests included working with the Interfaith Council, helping at the Mission and with Crop Walk, nature trail clean-up, and for Homelessness Prevention. Bob was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by Karen, his wife of 43 years, daughter Stephanie and Mark Hotaling of Nunn, Colorado and daughter Hilarie and Cliff Roberts and grandsons Colin and Daniel Roberts of Lafayette, Colorado, brothers Rodger and Dorothy Dana and Terry Dana of Castle Rock, Washington, nephew Phil Dana of Portland, Oregon, niece Julie and Dwight Mixson of Vestavia Hills, Alabama, great nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be given in memory of Bob to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 1200 S. Taft Hill Road, Fort Collins, Colorado 80521. These funds will be donated to Homelessness Prevention in Fort Collins. Memorial contributions may also be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Society of Denver or ALS in care of Allnutt Funeral Services, 650 W. Drake Road, Fort Collins, Colorado 80526. The family would like to thank the many people and caregivers who supported Bob through his illness and especially Dr. Ed Bender for his wonderful care and concern. A memorial service will be held to celebrate Bob’s life at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Fort Collins at 4:00 PM on Thursday, November 4, 2010.
