Robert Doerr Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Haskell Funeral Home - Lovell on Jun. 12, 2023.
Robert Rosmus "Bob" Doerr passed away on June 10th at Billing Clinic Hospital in Billings, Montana, surrounded by his loved ones. He was known to many as Coach or Coach Doerr.
He was born to Estella Lynn and Carl John Doerr on February 10, 1925, in Lovell, Wyoming.
Bob grew up in the Lovell area. When he was seven, due to the depression the family moved to California for employment opportunities. After one year, they decided to move back to Lovell so they could be closer to family. This is where he spent the rest of his formative years.
He learned the value of hard work at a very young age. He told stories of working beets, digging ditches all around town, hauling hay and many other work experiences. A strong work ethic is a trait that he instilled in his children and grandchildren.
When Bob was 12 years old, his father passed away. After this loss, the family became even closer. Their mother asked them to look out for each other, which they did their whole lives.
After high school, Bob served in the Army during World War II. At the conclusion of the war, he returned home to attend college and graduated from BYU with a degree in Education. He began his career teaching and coaching in Lyman Wyoming. While visiting a friend at BYU, Bob met his future wife, Hazel Meeks. They were married on May 30, 1958 in the St. George, Utah temple. They began their married life together in Lyman and eventually moved back to the Big Horn Basin and settled in Byron where they raised their six children.
Throughout his teaching career, Bob primarily taught Social Studies classes. However, he also was able to share his passion for photography by teaching that subject.
Sports were a major part of his life. As a young man, he played basketball with siblings and others from Lovell. They even traveled the country, winning a national championship. During his career, in addition to teaching, Bob coached many sports, primarily focusing on Basketball. He won many awards, both local and national, and was inducted to the inaugural class of the Wyoming Coaches Hall of Fame.
After retiring, Bob stayed active playing golf, continuing to raise cattle and tending to his large gardens which he loved to share with all. Also, he and his wife served for 16 years as ordinance workers in the Billings Montana Temple. You could always find Coach Doerr in the stands at local sporting events. He continued to exhibit the importance of family by caring for loved ones including his grandchildren. He also helped care for his mother-in-law and his wife until their passing.
He is survived by his children Carl (Jacque) Doerr of Lovell, Robert J (Carol) Doerr of Tooele Utah, Margo Doerr of Byron, Sandra (Mike) Negro of Round Rock Texas, Barbara (Casey) Walker of Lowell, Indiana and Beverly (Todd) Wacaser currently of Sydney Australia. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren (Chris, Tiera (Matt), Jessica, RJ, Sammy, Don, Matthew, Shantelle, Dominique, Casey Dalton, Madaleine, Shealynn (Cade), Scott, Blake and Toby) and 3.8 great-grandchildren (Skyler, Hazel, Harper and 1 great-grandson who is due in August).
He is preceded in death by his wife, Hazel, his parents and his siblings, Lynn, Norm, Gerald, Irene, Elenora, Richard and Beverly.

Coach Doerr was a coach, mentor, and dear friend in Lyman, Wyoming. We traveled the state together in football, basketball, and track, usually going in his 1950s Hudson, often driving most of the night to get home. he and Hazel used to make home-made ice cream that was rich and creamy, and they were free with their time and money. RIP good friend! I'll see you in the not too distant future.
