Robert Neal Duddleston Obituary
Robert Neal Duddleston, a humble servant to his Lord and Savior, peacefully went to be with the Lord on June 21, 2024, after bravely battling ALS with unwavering faith. He was surrounded by family up until the time of his death. He was born on March 1, 1944, in Decatur, Illinois, to the late Reverend John Wesley Duddleston and Florence Araminta (Shaw) Duddleston. Bob graduated from Eisenhower High School (Decatur, IL), where he was a member of the football and baseball teams-achieving the prestigious Illinois State Championship in baseball his senior year.
Upon graduation, Bob pursued higher education at the University of Illinois (Bachelor of Science), Duke University, North Texas State University (PhD studies), and Nova University (MBA). Bob served his country as a member of the Army during the Vietnam War and was decorated with three medals. Bob had a fulfilling career as an industrial polymer chemist working for various companies, including Caterpillar, Dayco, and Parker Hannifin, which took him across the United States (Illinois, Michigan, Florida, Ohio, Georgia, and Texas) and overseeing a plant in Mexico. Bob's passion for education brought him back to teaching, where he taught in DeKalb County (Atlanta, GA) and Columbus City Schools (Columbus, OH), along with substitute teaching in Upper Arlington Schools, where his grandchildren attended.
Growing up, Bob attended Riverside Baptist Church (Decatur, IL) and Third Street Baptist Church (East Moline, IL), where his father was the pastor. Whenever his job took him to new places, Bob's first goal was to find a new home church for him and his family. Throughout his whole life, Bob served God in various aspects. He led small groups and Sunday school, was a member of the Elder and Deacon boards, tended to the green space of the churches, coached Upward soccer, and supported multiple missionaries worldwide. His passion for spiritual growth was never-ending and led him to over 22 years as a member of Covenant Baptist Church (Columbus, OH). Bob loved his church, his congregation, and his community.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Bob cultivated numerous hobbies, including golfing, running, redoing the floors in his house, working on cars, and gardening. Family, friends, and neighbors went to Bob for yard advice, which gave him the nickname "Farmer Bob." Bob's profound intellect illuminated every encounter through tutoring his science-challenged grandchildren, teaching others, or having spirited discussions (even about politics) with family and friends.
Bob's love extended beyond his professional and spiritual pursuits. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Celeste Marie; his children Ann, Tim (Daphne), and Christine; his seven grandchildren Ralph, Ash (currently serving in the Navy), Kayla, Isabel, Kennedy, Lauren, and Colin; his brother John (Pat), sister Lois (Tom), and brother Jim (Eeva); ten nieces and nephews, and a host of cherished family members and friends.
A celebration of Bob's life will take place on Sunday, July 7, 2024, at Covenant Baptist Church (5100 Dierker Rd, Columbus, Ohio 43220).
Calling hours start at 3 pm, followed by a service to honor his memory. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Covenant Baptist Church to recognize Bob's lifelong commitment to faith and community.
