Any time someone from my childhood leaves us I am always reminded of the last line in the movie Stand by Me. The writer goes somehow we never have friends like we had when we were 12.
Bobby and I were baseball teammates on the Saints, a team in the Franklin Square PBC baseball league.
Our connection didn´t end there, we both ran for rival schools- Bobby for St Agnes and I for St Mary´s. On many Sundays we would go together on runs in Valley Stream State Park after 10 o´clock Mass at St Catherine´s. We talked a lot , about what I don´t remember but at the time it must have been important or funny. I finished fifth or sixth in the Regional race Bobby won. I still remember the headline: Duffy´s first win, the title.
As High School coaches we met occasionally but with me up North and Bobby down South Jersey, it didn´t happen too often.
Our time together as sports friends and rivals will remain with me for a long time.
Rest Easy, Jack Martin
