Robert Elliott Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Blake & Wagler Funeral Home - Montgomery on Mar. 6, 2026.
Robert "Bob" J. Elliott, 95, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at The Villages at Oak Ridge in Washington, Indiana.

Born on September 5, 1930 in Richmond, Indiana, Bob was the son of Howard H. and Doris O. Elliott. He married Julia M. (Bucci) in 1953, and they enjoyed 64 years together in a full and loving marriage before Julia passed away in 2017.

After graduating from Windfall High School in 1948, Bob began studies at Purdue University's School of Engineering. In 1951, he completed training at the Fort Sill Artillery Advanced Survey School and proudly served two years in the United States Army, primarily in Germany during the occupation of Germany during the Korean War.

After his military service, he resumed his studies at Purdue and went on to earn a degree in civil engineering.

Following graduation from Purdue, Bob built a successful career as a civil engineer. He began by working for consulting firms in Franklin and Indianapolis, but in 1961, accepted a job offer and moved his family from New Whiteland to Montgomery, and in 1963, became President of Midwestern Engineers, Inc., (MEI) in Loogootee. He continued as President until his retirement in 1993.

A dedicated civic leader, Bob spent countless hours devoted to community service, including submitting, through MEI, and successfully winning a federal grant that enabled the Montgomery Ruritan Club to build the Montgomery Ruritan Community Service Building.

Interested in flying, Bob became a licensed private pilot, which not only proved to be enjoyable, but also useful for traveling to MEI client meetings across Indiana and neighboring states – Ohio, Kentucky, and Illinois.

Bob was an avid boater and slalom water skier, happily accomplishing his goal of still being to slalom ski on his 70th birthday.

Bob and his wife, Julia, both looked forward to spending their winters at Sanibel Island in Florida. During their nearly 40 years of being there, Bob came to enjoy off-shore fishing and loved taking family and friends out for a day of fishing in his boat.

He and Julia also created many happy memories with their travels throughout the U.S. and visits to several other countries.

Though his family grieves his passing, they are grateful for the life lessons he exemplified – a strong work ethic, his determination to achieve goals he set for himself, and the way he selflessly stepped in to help his family and extended family.

In addition to his wife and parents, Bob was preceded in death by his 4 siblings: Evelyn Leffler, Ralph Elliott, Lois Anne Willits, and William "Bill" Elliott.

He will be lovingly remembered by his 4 daughters: Jane (Scott) Bingham, McCordsville, Linda (Doug) Esmon, Naperville, IL, Carolyn Stoll, Washington, and Doris (Tom) Schuler, Evansville, and by his 8 grandchildren: Christy (Kevin) Showalter Wnukiewicz, Brandt (Jackie) Showalter, Carissa (AJ) Gomez, Brian (Jamie) Esmon, David Stoll, Casey Stoll, Jordan (Sabrina) Stoll, and Elliott (Rachel) Thole.

Bob also leaves behind 10 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him so much joy in his later years, and 4 great-great grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews who have been so good to him throughout the years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Steven McGinnis at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at St. Peter Catholic Church in Montgomery. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be held on the same day from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Blake & Wagler Funeral Home in Montgomery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Gentiva Hospice Foundation (www.gentivahs.com) or to the Barr-Reeve Scholarship Foundation (https://www.barr.k12.in.us/en-US/br-scholarship-foundation-b9faf43a).
