Robert “Gary” Evans, 74, went home to be with the Lord, surrounded by family, Monday, February 20, 2023.
A Graveside memorial service will be held at Happy Home Church Cemetery on Thursday, February 23, 2023 at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Phil Surrett officiating.
Gary was born on February 25, 1948, to Irene McCollum Evans and the late Harold Evans. He grew up on his family’s farm in Rockingham County and graduated from Ruffin High School. After high school, he attended East Carolina University where he met his future wife and obtained his bachelor’s degree. Following college, he began his career in accounting. In his spare time, Gary enjoyed playing golf, fishing, and working on electronics, including restoring antique radios. He was also a HAM radio operator. Gary had a love of music, played guitar and maintained an extensive album collection. He loved taking trips to the Outer Banks and accumulated a large collection of lighthouses that he proudly displayed at home. He was an avid ECU Pirates football fan and loved to cheer on his alma mater.
Along with his father, he is preceded in death by his son, Dustin Evans.
Gary is survived by his wife of 51 years, Deborah Whitley Evans; son Patrick Evans and wife, Anna; granddaughter Jennie Evans; mother Irene Evans, fur baby Cream Puff, as well as a large and loving group of extended family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his honor to First Free Will Baptist Church at 2426 South Charles Blvd Greenville, NC 27858.
