Robert Gagne Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McGorray-Hanna Funeral Homes of Westlake on Dec. 19, 2025.
Robert J. Gagne "Gags" age 57. Married for 15 years to the love of his life, Mary Katherine "Katie" (nee Thomas). Dear son to Ronald and Karen Gagne (nee Gootee). Cherished brother to Todd Gagne and, Steven Gagne (Christine), Loved brother-in-law to Meghan Pochatek Raynor (Matthew), Gerald Thomas (Mary), and James Thomas (Megan). Special uncle to Sydney and Matthew Pochatek, Katherine Raynor, Connor and Sophia Gagne, Bridget, Kara, and Shannon Thomas, and Grace, Jimmy, and Eva Thomas. Rob also leaves behind many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Rob was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, attended Bishop Borgess High School and was an Evans Scholar at Michigan State University where he graduated from in 1986. After graduation, Rob began his life in a career he loved, working in hockey on all levels as a professional equipment manager starting in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings, then on to the AHL with the Adirondak Red Wings and Providence Bruins. He worked in the USHL and NAHL with the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets and the Cleveland Jr Barons. Then across the country he went to the Canadian Major Jr. A league to work for the Portland Winterhawks. It was then back home to Parma to open Gagne's Skate Shop and work with the Barons Hockey Organization and so many others in the hockey world both young and old.
Rob's passion extended well beyond hockey with his never-ending high hopes for his Lions and Tigers and Spartans, his love of golf and watching the ponies, especially on his trips to Saratoga Springs with Katie.
Truly one of the nicest people you will ever meet, Rob made friends easily, wherever he went and has the dearest life-long friends who he traveled frequently to Detroit to see.
Kind and loyal and the one who took care of everyone else, especially all his many, many hockey players and their families over the years, he will be so missed.
Everyone needs a "Gags" in their life.
Time to celebrate a special man.

Rob moved to Portland in 2009 to join a new staff and work for the Portland Winterhawks. He was an integral part of our championship teams and bringing the organization back to its glory years.
Rob`s passion and dedication to his work and the players was evident every day.

Rob impacted the game of hockey at all levels. He will be remembered by many for his personality and love of the game.

Dear Gagne Family:
The Barlick- Huntley families up in northern Michigan are so saddened at the news about Rob. Our families shared so much together in Detroit when all the Gagne boys were little. My brother Stephen & I will never forget you all. You were good scouts. We will be praying for your family, especially Mary Katherine. We lost our Dad Dec 20, 2017, so we know how it feels near the holidays. Stay strong, go to church. Keep praying. We love you.
