Robert J. Gordon

On April 28, 2022, retired civil engineer and construction executive Robert J. Gordon of Piscataway died peacefully at 96 years old. The elder son of James and Sarah, US immigrants from Belfast, Ireland, he was born February 28, 1926. A member of the greatest generation, Bob grew up in a two-bedroom walk-up in depression era Newark with his parents, uncle, two brothers, and sister. He was a track team miler in high school, and upon graduation enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1944. Following WWII, he earned his Civil Engineering BS from Manhattan College in New York City. He married Anne Marie Connor in 1956 and in 1960 they settled in Piscataway, NJ. They became life-long residents while enjoying their Mantoloking beach house in the summers. Bob worked for five private construction companies over his 46-year career as the nation's Federal and State highway systems were built. In the 1970's, he co-founded GOLOMORE Construction, and wound up his career at Conduit and Foundation retiring in 1999. Bob was a true gentleman, always ready to lend a helping hand. He was the straight man and backstop for his wife Anne's full calendar of activities. They shared many pranks, cookouts, parties, and good works with their Mitchell Avenue cohort as it grew over the years. Bob loved tough guys and funny men alike, Cagney and Gleason, was an inveterate NYT reader, and remained an avid walker who never lost a step and stayed up with the times. His real joy was his family and he loved following each of his five grandson's pursuits as they built their own roads to the future. Bob is survived by his brother, Joe (Lorraine) Gordon of Baltimore, MD; daughter, Kathleen (Tom) Police of Clark Summit, PA; sons, Robert Gordon of Washington, DC; Timothy Gordon, of Piscataway, NJ; five grandchildren, Christopher (Marietta) and Daniel (Eileen) Police, Connor, Will, and Clark Gordon; one great grandchild Cozette Police, and Meredith Gordon of Bethesda, MD. He was predeceased by his wife Anne Marie Connor Gordon in 2018, brother James Gordon and sister Sarah Biddell. Funeral Services will be private. A remembrance will be held at a later date.
