Robert Grant Obituary

Robert Nathan Grant, born March 7, l930 in Newburgh, NY, devoted husband of 70 years to Barbara Weil Grant and loving father to Susan Grant and Nory LeBrun, Elizabeth Ellerton (Lucy), and Nancy Grant and Steven Gray (Hannah and Caroline), passed away on December 25, 2022 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. Bob grew up in Newburgh, NY where his father was the Corporation Counsel for the city. He graduated from Newburgh Free Academy, where he participated in ROTC, was an Eagle Scout, and attended the 1947 World Jamboree of Peace, held in Moisson, France. Bob graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Yale University in 1951 and served as a First Lieutenant in the USAF during the Korean War, where he was stationed in Tachikawa, Japan. After graduating from Harvard Law School in 1956, Bob joined Sonnenschein Carlin Nathan & Rosenthal and practiced law there for the next 63 years until his retirement in 2019.

Bob also served his community as chairman of the Legal Aid Society of Illinois; as a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of Metropolitan Family Services (formerly United Charities); as a former president of the Board of Directors of the Scholarship and Guidance Association; and as president of the Winnetka School Board, the Winnetka Plan Commission and the Winnetka Village Caucus. Bob is the former chairman of both the Winnetka Public Schools Foundation and the New Trier Township High School Education Foundation. His family survives him and will always remember his kindness, his optimism, and how much he adored his wife.

Barbara and family - I was saddened to read of Bob´s death. I met Bob in 1957 at the start of my few years with Sonnenschein and though it´s been quite awhile since we saw one another, he made an indelible impression upon me. His decency, kindness and capability are memorable, as well as the good times with him and you, Barbara, a long time ago. May you all be comforted by cherished memories of Bob as your husband/father/grandfather.

My sincere condolences to the Grant family. I had the honor and privilege of working with Bob during my two stints at Sonnenschein -- from 1986 (straight out of law school) to 1991, and again from 1998 to 2005. During my first stint at Sonnenschien I could count on one hand (with a few fingers left over!), the number of partners who called me into theirs offices to tell me "nice job" -- and Bob was one of the first. After the first time he told me "nice job" - I would bend over backwards to try to work for him. He was one of the kind ones -- a true gentleman and scholar. Even after all these years, I remember his kind words and have tried to pay it forward to the young attorneys that I now mentor. He impacted me and others more than he could have imagined. They don't make them like Bob anymore. May his memory be a belessing.

My heart goes out to Barbara, Liz, Nancy, and Susan. My memories of Bob are that he was warm and engaging and so very loving and proud of his family and their accomplishments. His presence touched many and he will not be forgotten!

I was sorry to read Mr. Grant's obit, I had the pleasure of working with him more than once at Sonnenschein years ago and he was a great boss and a real gentleman, they don't make them like that anymore. My condolences to his family.

I have an old picture of Mr. Grant. Nancy and I, as second graders, are on either side of him, each holding a hand, in Lake Michigan. It's a classic. He was the last of his kind, notable and impressive in countless ways, but to my mind, it was his devotion to family that stands above all else.

To Barbara and the rest of Bob's family: I want to express my sincere condolences on Bob's passing. I knew Bob for over 50 years, first as a lawyer to my family, and then as a wise mentor and valued friend. I so looked forward to our lunches together because I knew that whatever issue we were facing, Bob always seemed to know what to do. He made a difference in my life, as he did for so many others.

I worked at SNR with Bob from 1997-2002. It was a difficult place to work, but Bob was one of the good ones. He was a pleasure to work with. Smart, kind, gentle. An absolute class act.

Barbara and Family - My most sincere condolences to you all. Bob epitomized the word, "mensch", and was a true gentleman and kind soul. Though it has been some time since I last saw Bob and all of you, my memories of lots of laughter endure. With Love.

Steve and I were sad to learn of Bob's passing. He had an extraordinary legal career, and he will be remembered with fondness and respect. We send our sincere condolences to Barbara and the family.

Bob was a marvelous man and a charming luncheon companion. Don, Bob and I would often meet and go to Ceres in the Board of Trade building. The talk was often about how the firm had changed but these lunches made the changes seem far away.
