Robert Grooms Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Rogers Funeral Home - McColl from Nov. 14 to Nov. 15, 2025.
McColl

Robert "Coon" Grooms, 80, passed away peacefully at Morrison Manor in Laurinburg, NC on November 13, 2025, surrounded by his loving family after an extended illness.

He was the son of the late Allen and Dovie Bell Locklear Grooms, born in Scotland County June 21, 1945. He was the third oldest son of eleven siblings. He was employed as a truck driver with Carolina Processing for 41 years.

Coon, as he was affectionately known, was an avid fan of Nascar and Dale Earnhardt's biggest fan. His favorite sports teams were the South Carolina Gamecocks and the Dallas Cowboys. He was famous for riding through the town of McColl daily at a speed of 5-10 miles per hour. He was a simple man of few words; a nod from him would have to suffice. His past will stay in the past, and to know him was to love him. He valued his friendships deeply and remained loyal to those he loved.

Coon is survived by his wife, Becky Barfield Grooms of the home; daughter, Angela Dianne Evans of Laurinburg, NC; stepson, Kevin Barfield; brother, Jennings Grooms (Bernice) of McColl, SC; sisters, Carolyn Grooms, Gladys Marie Lee (Larry), and Loraine Lesley of McColl, SC; and Darlene Grooms Rosario (Alberto) of Goldsboro, NC; grandchildren, Calvin Platt and Seirra Walls of Laurinburg, NC; sister-in-law, Phyllis B. Grooms of McColl, SC; special friend, Ralph Quick of McColl, SC.

Coon was preceded in death by his parents listed above; son, Robert Grooms Jr.; brothers, John Allen Grooms, Melvin Grooms, Marshall Grooms and Richard Grooms; and sister, Dorothy Grooms Clark.

A funeral service will be held at 3pm, Sunday, November 16, 2025, at McColl Pentecostal Holiness Church, with burial at Rogers Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-3pm just prior to the service at the church on Sunday.

The family wishes to acknowledge their sincere appreciation for the exceptional care provided by the nursing staff at Scotland Memorial Hospital. Their kindness, compassion, patience and support will never be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be made to: Scotland Regional Hospice, PO Box 1003, Laurinburg, NC 28352.

Yes, to know you wasto love you. I'll never forget how after moving to McColl SC to stay with Gilbert Locklear, we saw you at The water hole one Saturday evening and Gilbert and I decided to do a little something special and cooked a few dishes and brought them with us to our favorite hang out spot. You and Nate Dogg both enjoyed some of the pie I had baked, strawberry banana cream pie, and that evening I decided that I would start doing bake orders for people within the McColl community. You and Nate both placed an order with me as I think Wayne Taylor did too that Saturday. Yours was a German Walnut Cake and I will never forget how excited I was to shop for the ingredients and learn the recipe as I had never baked that kind before. I was careful to take my time and fo sho, everything turned out perfectly as I'd hoped. I called you up and let you know your cake was ready, and I distinctly remember your big boy black truck pulling up beduse that cinder block building at 101 North Marlboro Street, Gilbert and I called home. The best and easiest 20.00 I Ever made and I recal even l how I told your son whom I loved, Coon EZ years later about baking you a cake. He thought I was talking some other junk.lol well, now both of my favorite Grooms are together again, I was just listening to EZ yesterday on 0 to 100 Remix, that's how mucho uch yall left an impact on my heart, soul and mind even though I've been living here in Northern California all of five years now, I live on to say I love yall today, tomorrow and for always. Let celebrate when I finally get there.
Love,
Krystal T Baby, Freedom Ryder
