R. David Hehl, 78, of Avon Lake, Ohio passed away Thursday, September 2, 2021 surrounded by his beloved family. He was born November 5, 1942 in Toledo, Ohio to Robert and Dorothy (nee Schaeffer) Hehl.
David was a strong, intelligent, and talented man, who had a wicked sense of humor and knew the value of a good joke. As a proud veteran of the US Army, he served overseas in Korea as a surveyor. David served as the Chief Technical Aide to the City of Avon Lake, retiring after nearly 20 years. After retirement he went on to work as an Estimator for West End Land Development for 5 years, where he was affectionately known as "Dirt Dog".
David enjoyed participating in the Community Theater and was cast alongside Sharon Bambao in his first on-stage role as her husband. Sharon and David went on to be married for real, and they enjoyed nearly 39 years together. He enjoyed reading, especially science fiction, and watching older TV shows like "Leave it to Beaver", "Soupy Sales" and "The Andy Griffith Show" and could often be found enjoying these activities with a beloved pet on his lap. David was also very skilled with computer editing and would create and edit his own videos to share with family. He loved to experience all nature had to share, from feeding the birds and squirrels in his yard, to fishing, to taking long three mile walks in the park with Lexie, his pet Yorkie.
David was the beloved husband of Sharon Hehl for 36 years; loving father of Wesley (Sherry) Hehl, Kimberly (Danny) Robarge, Patricia (Jeff McCullough) Hehl, and the late Ryan Bambao; cherished grandfather of Courtney Dyer (Amber Miller), Haylee and Kaylee Robarge, and Lauren Myers (Zach Fink); dear brother of Gary Hehl and the late Cynthia Parma; fur daddy to Lexie; and special uncle to Chrissy (Tom), Bobby, Hope, Chelsea (David) and family, Matthew, Eric and Brian.
