Robert was born September 8, 1939, to Rudolph L. and Martha Karstensen Helberg on the family homestead in Fairmont, Oklahoma and passed from this life January 30, 2026, in Midwest City, Oklahoma.
He was raised and educated in Fairmont, attending Garber Public Schools, graduating from High School in 1956. He started working in the oilfields at age 16. He then worked at a filling station in Guthrie after graduating. In 1964 he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was a veteran of the Vietnam war serving in Intelligence. He married Verla Jean Gordan July 8, 1966. After leaving the Air Force he began his eighteen-year career with Pope Distributing. He left Pope for a partnership in a machine shop in Guthrie. The business didn't work out and he spent time working various jobs to make ends meet. Then he began his career at BNSF as a brakeman moving on to be a Conductor and then Engineer, retiring in the age of sixty-six. Throughout the years he also farmed the family homested. He enjoyed farming, riding horses, finding a great dive bar, and fishing, but not catching fish… He was proud to be a founding member of the Coors Buck and Bow Hunt. He was an excellent marksman and enjoyed shooting. Spending time with his family brought him great joy.
He is survived by his wife Verla Helberg, of the home, one son Ryan Helberg and wife Heather, of Harrah, three grandchildren, Jaden, Kylin, and Belle.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph and Martha Helberg, his siblings Norman, Shirley, Richard, and Edith.
