Robert E. Herring, a beloved father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2025, at Colonial Oaks Health and Rehab in Marion, Indiana, at the age of 96. Born on May 13, 1929, he was the cherished son of the late Homer and Ruth Herring. Robert spent a lifetime in Monroe Township, where he cultivated a deep love for his community and made lifelong friends.
In 1947, Robert married his high school sweetheart, Beverly Briles, and together they built a loving home filled with warmth and support until her passing. A skilled metal finisher, Robert dedicated 33 ½ years of his life to General Motors, from which he retired in 1993. His impressive career was matched only by his passion for life, where he embraced challenges as opportunities to learn and grow.
Robert was a remarkable man who could fix or build anything, a true testament to his craftsmanship and resourcefulness. His mantra-"never met a stranger"-sums up his gentle spirit and sincere approach to life, as he welcomed everyone with open arms. An avid golfer, Robert cherished the time spent on the course and the friendships made there, as well as enjoying meals at Cracker Barrel, where he often visited twice a day, and where the staff treated him like family.
He was the rock of his family, and was always present for his children. His love extended to his grandchildren, who fondly remember their days of having ice cream with him and roasting hot dogs by his wood-burning stove.
Robert attended Brookhaven Wesleyan Church, and lived out his beliefs with kindness and generosity, making a lasting impact on those who knew him.
Robert is survived by his children, Susan Southworth and David (Cheryl) Herring; daughter-in-law, Carol Herring; brother, Don (Juanita) Herring; sisters, Bonnie Burton and Carolyn Ketring; sister-in-law, Evelyn Herring; 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Ruth; wife, Beverly; son, Michael Herring; son-in-law, Bob Southworth; brothers, Rev. Ronald, Charles, and Gerald "Bud" Herring; sisters-in-law, Sarah and Ada Herring; and brothers-in-law, Clif Burton and Stephen Ketring.
A funeral service will be held at the Jones-Smith Chapel of Armes-Hunt Life Celebration Funeral Home and Cremation Services on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., where family and friends will gather to celebrate Robert's life and the legacy of love he leaves behind. A time of visitation will precede the service from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. He will be laid to rest at Jefferson Cemetery.
