Robert Horne Obituary

Robert L. Horne, a devoted trucker and a loving family man, departed this life on March 2, 2026, at the age of 90. Born on November 1, 1935, Robert's journey was marked by miles traveled and lives touched, never shying away from the open road that defined so much of his existence.

For the majority of his life, Robert embraced the life of an over-the-road trucker. The hum of the engine was music to his ears, the highways his canvas, and he shared this love for the road not just with the world, but intimately with his family. His beloved wife, Patricia, with whom he shared a remarkable 65 years of marriage until her passing, frequently accompanied him on his journeys, capturing life's little adventures through the lens of her camera. Together, they created a tapestry of memories adorned with cacti, palm trees, and stones he lovingly brought back from far-flung destinations.

In the adventure-filled chapters of his life, Robert also found immense joy in his role as a grandfather. He proudly took his only grandson, Dawson, across every continental state, a veritable rite of passage that boasted many roadside attractions. With a twinkle in his eye, he regaled Dawson with tales of their McDonald’s visits, ensuring that their time together forged lasting bonds and unforgettable memories.

Guided by a strong sense of faith, Robert recognized the importance of spirituality in life. At Waycross Baptist Church, he found a community that mirrored his values, a congregation where smiles and prayers blended into a harmony that uplifted his very soul.

Robert was not merely a man of wanderlust; he was also a teacher in the truest sense. He imparted not just the joy of living, but a robust work ethic that inspired all who knew him. From teaching Dawson the intricacies of tractor maintenance to splitting logs for warmth and carving pieces of art from wood, Robert instilled skills that would last a lifetime, reminding them that hard work is the foundation of dreams.

A proud Air Force veteran, Robert held his military service close to his heart. He faced challenges with courage and integrity, reflecting the values that guided his life beyond the truck cab.

Later in life, Robert found companionship once more with Sue Horne, and together, they nurtured not only their garden but also each other, reveling in the shared pleasures of woodworking and nurturing life. Their bond, too, was tragically interrupted when Sue passed, leaving Robert with cherished memories of laughter and love.

Robert is survived by his grandson, Dawson Thornley (Des Renae); his great-granddaughter, Allison Wilkins; and two sisters, Sarah Myrtle Cash and Ruby Rainey.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Rebecca Horne; his wives, Patricia Horne and Sue Horne; his daughter, Melinda Darlene Horne Thornley; and a brother, J.W. Horne.

The family will receive friends on Monday, March 9, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 2:45 PM at Robinson Funeral Home – Powdersville Road, with a graveside service to follow at 3:00 PM in the Robinson Memorial Gardens Veterans Garden.

As we gather to honor the legacy of Robert L. Horne, we remember a life richly lived, filled with love, adventure, and lessons that will echo through generations. He leaves behind a legacy of memories, stories, and an indelible impact that will linger in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
