On November 15, 2024, at 2:25 a.m., Robert E. Isabell Sr. passed away in Goshen, Indiana, surrounded by the love of his family. At the age of 69, Robert's remarkable journey on Earth came to a peaceful end, leaving behind a legacy defined by love, dedication, and selflessness.
Early Life
Robert was born on February 2, 1955, to Mae Frances Fennell. As the eldest of his siblings-Jerome, Sheila Renee (who he now joins in Heaven), Nathaniel, and Patricia Fennell Bradley; nephews Keith and Cameron Isabell, Curtis Bradley and Darryl Stanton; and nieces Brittany Isabell and Tameka Buckhanan; Robert naturally embraced the role of protector and guide. From an early age, he made sure his siblings walked to school looking sharp, honoring their mother's pride in her family. His sense of responsibility and leadership began at home, qualities he carried throughout his life.
Robert graduated from DeAndries Private Catholic High School in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1974. Shortly after, he pursued his dream of serving his country by enlisting in the United States Marines. For 15 years, he served as an Aircraft Power Plant Mechanic, specializing in the F-14 Tomcat jets famously featured in Top Gun. Although his height kept him from becoming a pilot, Robert's passion for aviation never dimmed. After his military service, he worked as an engineer for McDonnell Douglas and Lockheed, contributing to groundbreaking aerospace advancements before transitioning to a career as a contractor. His dedication to aviation remained a driving force throughout his life.
A Life of Learning and Mastery
Robert was a lifelong learner and a self-made man, embodying the belief that knowledge and dedication could achieve anything. After his time with Mcdonnell Douglas, he studied project management at American InterContinental University in Atlanta, sharpening skills that later fueled his work as a contractor.
Despite having no formal training in construction, Robert became a self-taught master of the craft through sheer determination and an insatiable hunger for knowledge. He immersed himself in books, manuals, and hands-on practice, mastering every detail of the trade. From laying sturdy foundations and designing efficient plumbing systems to precise framing, intricate carpentry, and mastering drywall installation, he left no aspect of the process untouched. Later, he expanded his expertise to include roofing, tiling, and electrical work, often collaborating with his good friend Jerry, whose mentorship and shared passion for learning became a source of inspiration. Robert's dedication to understanding every tool, material, and technique ensured no detail was overlooked-not even a single nail.
Roberts passion for precision and excellence became the cornerstone of his small construction business. Using lessons from his aviation days, he ensured every project was as flawless as a perfectly engineered jet.
Robert's love for flying also found an outlet in flight simulators. He would spend hours "flying" across the globe, chatting with live air traffic controllers, and perfecting his landings. His joy in flying was infectious and a reminder that with enough passion, dreams can take flight in unexpected ways.
Though he disliked working on cars-calling it a "beautiful curse"-Robert couldn't resist helping friends and family. Whether fixing an engine or solving a household problem, he never expected payment, famously saying, "Just buy me a beer." His skills earned him admiration, particularly in 1977, when he rebuilt his father-in-law's car engine, gaining not only a fan but lifelong respect.
Family Life
Robert married the love of his life, Elizabeth Soliz, on June 18, 1976. Their story began with Robert's persistence, declaring from the start that Elizabeth was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen and that she would one day be the mother of his children. His unwavering devotion paid off, and together they built a beautiful life.
The couple raised three children, whom Robert lovingly called his "three heartbeats": Lisa Ann, Robert Jr., and Jennifer Nicole. He was a proud grandfather to Breann, Justyce, Essynce, Joshua, Quintyn, Breyonce, Amadeus, and Isyss, and a great-grandfather to Nyla and Marcelo.
To Robert, family was everything. He poured his heart into every relationship, creating cherished memories through laughter, music, and shared meals. His favorite tradition was Sunday breakfast, where he cooked pancakes, bacon, and skillet-fried eggs the way his mother had taught him.
A Life of Passion and Joy
Robert's vibrant personality shone through his many passions. As a young Marine, he moonlighted as a DJ, spinning records that ranged from R&B and funk to country and Mexican music. His record collection was legendary, and his talent made him the go-to DJ for every event.
He loved to fish, dance, and cook, often saying, "Ain't nothin' to it but to do it, let's get down!" Whether cooking up a new recipe, teaching someone how to dance, or sharing his favorite music, Robert brought energy and joy to everyone around him.
A Legacy of Light
Robert will be remembered as a man of unwavering kindness. He was a warrior for God, an "angle of light" whose presence could illuminate even the darkest places. His gift was his ability to help others, often sacrificing his own needs for the good of those around him.
When asked why he often worked for free or charged so little, he replied, "It makes me feel good to help others, and the smile on their faces when a project is finished is priceless. The hope is they'll pass on the good deed. I'll leave that in their corner because I know God is in my corner."
He believed that knowledge, hard work, and love were the keys to life, and his legacy is a testament to those values.
Celebration of Life
A memorial service will be held on November 26, 2024, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, 1911 S. Main St., Goshen, IN. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., with services beginning at 4:00 p.m.
