Robert Collins Leonard

Dr. Robert Collins Leonard-known to many as Bob, or "Doc"-passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday morning, March 3. He was a devoted husband to the love of his life, Sue (Miles) Leonard, with whom he shared nearly 67 wonderful years of marriage.

Together they built a loving home and raised their family in the Valley. He is survived by his children: Kate Leonard Barr of Lincoln, Nebraska; Andrew Leonard of Plymouth, Minnesota; and Sam Leonard of Prosper, Texas. He was preceded in death by his son, Steve Leonard. "Grandpa Doc" also leaves behind three cherished grandchildren: Connor Barr and Holly Barr of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Jorja Leonard of Prosper, Texas.

Family meant everything to Bob, and some of the most treasured memories were made at the family cabin in Highland Pines in Prescott, Arizona, where generations gathered to enjoy the mountains, laughter, and time together.

Dr. Leonard dedicated his life to caring for others through medicine. He began his practice at Berkley Clinic in Michigan, serving patients there from 1964 to 1969. Drawn by the warm climate of Arizona, he, Sue, and the family moved to Phoenix, where he practiced family medicine from 1969 until his retirement in 2001. During his long and compassionate career, he served on staff at Phoenix General Hospital and held courtesy staff positions at Maryvale Samaritan Hospital, Phoenix Baptist Hospital, and Community Hospital Medical Center.

In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Leonard gave generously of his time and expertise. He served on the board of Phoenix Interfaith Counseling Service, participated in the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA), and cared for young athletes as the Athletic Team Physician at Apollo High School. He also contributed to medical education through adjunct faculty appointments at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri and the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific in Pomona, California.

Another joy in Bob's life was helping several young men from Sudan acclimate to life in America. He assisted them building careers and families. Even after they were established, Bob enjoyed visiting their homes and especially loved bringing ice cream for the children.

Dr. Leonard will be remembered as a compassionate physician, devoted husband, proud father and grandfather, and a man who quietly served his community with kindness and integrity.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 21, 11:00 a.m. at Crosswinds Presbyterian Church, 20125 N. 15th Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85027.
