Early Childhood
Bob was born on September 24, 1957, in
Vicksburg, Mississippi. As the child of a military family, Bob grew up on the move, learning early how to adapt, explore, and embrace new places and people. His childhood was shaped by travel and change, as his family lived in Mississippi, California, Germany, Michigan, and eventually Nebraska, where Bob would later graduate from high school. Of all the places Bob called home, Germany held the most treasured memories. Those years left a lasting impression on him-filled with adventure, travel, and friendships that endured across a lifetime. He loved the winter sports, the beauty of the seasons, and exploring Germany's rich history. These early experiences sparked his curiosity about the world and nurtured the sense of wonder, independence, and love of learning that would stay with him throughout his life.
Schooling
Bob began his educational journey in Bellevue, Nebraska, where he graduated from high school and quickly distinguished himself through his intelligence and natural aptitude for technology. He went on to attend the University of Southern Mississippi, but his path did not follow a traditional timeline. Bob was eager to step beyond the classroom and into the world, driven by a desire to work, build, and apply what he was learning in real time.
True to his lifelong commitment to growth, Bob later returned to school while actively working in his career-a testament to his discipline, perseverance, and love of learning. Balancing professional responsibilities with continued education, he earned his Bachelor's degree in Computer Science. His educational journey reflected who Bob was at his core: someone who valued learning not as an endpoint, but as a lifelong pursuit, guided by purpose, curiosity, and determination.
Early Work & Career
Bob was gifted with an extraordinary mind-one that was far ahead of its time. Even in the 1970s, while still in high school, he was already working at the forefront of computer engineering, exploring technologies that most people had yet to imagine. His intelligence was evident not only in what he knew, but in how naturally he understood complex systems and made them work.
Bob learned best by doing. While traditional academia had its place, he truly thrived in hands-on problem-solving-taking things apart, building them back better, and learning through real-world application. His curiosity and love of learning guided him from working with computers as a teenager to eventually overseeing the computer systems of a nuclear power plant. At Palo Verde in Phoenix, Arizona, he carried immense responsibility with calm confidence, precision, and integrity.
This journey reflected more than professional achievement-it revealed Bob's God-given gifts. He used his talents with humility, dedication, and purpose, never seeking praise, but always striving for excellence. His life reminds us that learning is not confined to classrooms, and that when gifts are nurtured with passion and discipline, they can be used to serve something far greater than oneself.
Marriage
Bob married his true love, Lynn Sowell, and from the very beginning, they knew they were meant for one another. United by their deep faith and devotion to God, their connection was immediate and unmistakable. Trusting in that calling, they were married after just ten weeks of dating, confident that God had brought them together.
Together, Bob and Lynn were blessed with a son, Zachary. After only one day of life, Zachary was called home to be with the Lord. Though this loss was profound, Bob found comfort and peace in his faith, holding firmly to the promise that he would one day be reunited with his son in eternal life. This hope strengthened Bob and Lynn's bond and deepened their trust in God's plan.
Throughout their years of marriage, Bob and Lynn shared many adventures, walking side by side through life with love, laughter, and purpose. Their dedication to serving God and the church became a beautiful and enduring bond, one rooted in faith, resilience, and a love that continues beyond this life.
Retirement
Upon retirement, Bob and Lynn briefly settled in
Vicksburg, Mississippi, before embarking on what would become Bob's final great adventure-moving to Florida with his beloved wife. There, they chose to live near his sister and nieces, a decision that brought deep joy and gratitude. His sister was especially thankful for the precious time she was able to share with Bob and Lynn during those years.
In Florida, Bob and Lynn became very active in their church, quickly forming meaningful friendships and embracing new experiences together. Surrounded by faith, family, and community, they continued to live with purpose, gratitude, and a spirit of adventure that reflected the life they had built side by side.
Interests
Bob's curiosity and love of learning were not confined to books or computers-they were evident from his earliest years. As a boy, he was fascinated by all things mechanical, spending hours exploring how things worked. Trains, go-carts, and gadgets of every kind captured his imagination, and he delighted in understanding their inner workings. That same hands-on curiosity followed him throughout life, from youthful tinkering to solving complex engineering challenges as an adult.
Bob also found great joy in experiences that connected him to both nature and adventure. He loved to travel and cherished time spent camping with Lynn, embracing the simple beauty of the outdoors and the shared moments those trips provided. Fishing brought him peace, while flying remote-controlled airplanes combining his love of mechanics, precision, and flight. Sports of all kinds were another passion-whether participating or watching, Bob appreciated the skill, strategy, and camaraderie they represented. In all his interests, Bob approached life with enthusiasm, thoughtfulness, and a deep
appreciation for the world around him.
Achievements
Bob's achievements in life were the result of an extraordinary mind, a strong work ethic, and an unwavering sense of purpose. From a young age, he demonstrated remarkable intelligence and technical ability, working with computers at a time when the field was still in its infancy. His early passion and curiosity laid the foundation for a career that would place him in positions of great responsibility and trust.
One of Bob's most significant professional achievements was overseeing and running computer systems for the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station in Phoenix, Arizona-an accomplishment that speaks not only to his brilliance, but to his precision, reliability, and integrity. Few are entrusted with work of such importance, and Bob carried that responsibility with humility and quiet confidence. Throughout his career, he continued to grow, adapt, and learn, ultimately earning his Bachelor's
degree in Computer Science while working full time.
Yet Bob's greatest achievements extended beyond his professional life. His enduring marriage to Lynn, his devotion to God, his service to the church, and his loyalty to family and friends were the accomplishments that mattered most to him. He built a life defined not by titles or recognition, but by faith, love, and the positive impact he had on those around him. In that way, Bob's life stands as a true measure of success.
Admirable Personal Qualities
Bob's kindness and compassion were not just traits-they were expressions of a soul grounded in love. He lived with integrity and honesty, guided by a quiet moral compass that never wavered. In his presence, you felt safe, seen, and valued, because his heart was rooted in truth.
He carried humility with him wherever he went, never seeking recognition, yet leaving a profound impact. His generosity flowed freely, and his loyalty was unwavering-once you were loved by him, you were loved completely. And even in life's heavier moments, his humor was a blessing, reminding us that joy and laughter are sacred gifts meant to lift the spirit.
God blessed him with a curious and creative mind. He loved learning, questioning, and understanding the deeper meaning behind things. His critical thinking and creativity reflected a reverence for wisdom and truth, and his desire to grow spiritually and intellectually was evident in how he lived. He reminded us that learning is a lifelong journey, and that faith and understanding can grow hand in hand.
While we miss him deeply, we take comfort in knowing that his spirit lives on-held in God's eternal care and carried forward through the lives he touched. His legacy is love, and that love does not end. It continues in our memories, in our actions, and in the way we choose to live, honoring him by embodying the same kindness, compassion, and grace he so freely gave to the world.
His Relationship with God
Bob's relationship with God was the foundation of his life. His faith was sincere, steady, and deeply personal-guiding his decisions, shaping his character, and grounding him in every season of life. He trusted God not only in words, but through the way he lived, seeking to serve others with humility, integrity, and love. As Scripture reminds us, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding" (Proverbs 3:5).
Bob found great joy in serving the church, especially in teaching and mentoring young people. He loved sharing God's Word with children, teaching Sunday school, directing Vacation Bible School, leading youth groups, and co-leading children's ministry. He believed deeply in Jesus' words, "Let the little children come to me" (Matthew 19:14), and lived out that calling with patience, warmth, and joy.
Just as much as he loved teaching, Bob also loved learning. He faithfully participated in adult Bible studies, continually seeking deeper understanding and spiritual growth. His life reflected the truth of Scripture: "Well done, good and faithful servant" (Matthew 25:21). Bob's walk with God was a lifelong journey of faith, service, and devotion-one that continues to inspire all who were blessed to know him.
