Robert Lee Masculine, 95, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, January 4, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Robert lived a life defined by service, ingenuity, and quiet strength.
Born on December 1, 1930, in
Houston, Texas, Robert was the beloved son of the late Homer Joseph Masculine and Olivia Josephine Masculine. After graduating from Landon High School, he proudly served his country as an Army veteran of the Korean War and was honorably discharged. During his service, Robert worked as a cook, a role he cherished. One of his most meaningful memories was preparing and serving the final meal to soldiers before they departed for their assigned duty stations. He often spoke of how blessed he felt to serve them in this way, a reflection of his humility and deep sense of care for others.
Following his military service, Robert returned to Jacksonville, where he put down roots and began a lifelong career with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department. He retired in 1994 after many years of dedicated service. He started his career at Station #1, where he drove the Tiller on the Ladder Truck. He later played a key role in helping form Jacksonville's first Hazardous Materials Unit-also the first of its kind in the nation. Known by his fellow firefighters as "the calm in the storm," Robert had a rare ability to remain steady under pressure. His creativity and problem-solving skills led him to invent several tools that became essential to Hazmat teams, leaving a lasting impact on the department he loved.
Outside of his career, Robert was a gifted and hardworking man who could fix just about anything, from small motors to antique cars. He loved to tinker, whether working on his home, tending to his yard, or spending time with his beloved lawn mower. Robert was also an excellent cook, a skill that began in the Army and continued throughout his life. Every Sunday after church, he faithfully prepared wonderful lunches for his family, creating treasured moments of togetherness around the table and memories that will be forever cherished.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his brother, James Masculine; his sister, Flo Scott; his daughter, Robin Hayden; and his son, Charles Pickett.
He is survived by his wife of 70 wonderful years, Peggy Masculine, whose love and partnership were the foundation of his life. He also leaves behind two daughters, Peggy Wilson (Mike) and Kimberly McLarty (Dale); his sister, Betty Jo Wheeler; his brother, Homer Masculine (Ellen); nine grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at the Event Center at Peeples, 14165 N. Main Street, with Pastor Danny Baggett officiating. Burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Jacksonville National Cemetery with United States Army Honors and Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department Honors.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Peeples Family Funeral Home is honored to serve the Masculine family.
