Robert "Bob" Mattingly, a free spirit with a heart of gold, passed away on Sunday evening, March 16, 2025. Born on May 14, 1950, in Cheverly, Maryland. Bob spent most of his life in Laurel, Maryland, before recently moving to Lowell, Michigan, to be closer to his younger brother Jim and his family.
Bob was a man of many passions and a few great mysteries. He loved his family deeply, even if he sometimes kept them guessing. A true sports fan, he never wavered in his devotion to the Washington Redskins, and he had an enduring love for golf, poker, and classic tunes-especially Steely Dan.
Bob was an avid poker player and a true competitor who relished the challenge and camaraderie of playing poker, whether it was a friendly neighborhood game or a high-stakes tournament. When he wasn't at the poker table, you could find Bob at the racetrack, where he also loved the thrill of horse racing.
In addition to his poker pursuits, Bob led a life full of diverse roles and adventures. He navigated the streets as a cab driver and eventually served as an elementary school crossing guard where he brightened the days of countless children with his trademark high-fives and endless humor, never missing an opportunity to make someone smile.
Though he had an independent streak, one thing was certain: Bob never forgot a birthday, Mother's Day, or Father's Day. He made sure his loved ones felt remembered and cherished, always finding a way to reach out, no matter where he was. He adored his many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, and he left behind a family who will forever miss his humor, kindness, and unexpected wit.
Bob is survived by his brothers, James (Lori) Mattingly of Lowell, MI, Mike (Katie) Mattingly of Annapolis, MD; sister, Sharon (Jeff) Gray of Gettysburg, PA; sister-in-law, Doreen Mattingly of Harbeson, DE; nine nieces and nephews; and six great-nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Martha and Herbert Mattingly; and his brother, David Mattingly.
