Robert George McCluney, Jr. (Big George)

Robert G. McCluney, Jr., age 87, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025, in Birmingham, Alabama, just one day shy of his 88th birthday.

Born on December 17, 1937, in Gadsden, Alabama, Big George was the beloved son of Robert George McCluney, Sr. and Johnnie Mae McCluney. He proudly served his country in both the United States Army and the United States Army Reserve-a commitment he held with deep pride throughout his life. Big George was a man who found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He especially cherished time spent with family and friends on the front porch, where stories were shared and memories made. His presence was a steady and comforting one-always ready with a warm smile and a listening ear. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Mary McCluney. Together, they built a life centered around love and family. Their bond extended deeply into their roles as grandparents; Big George and Mary were unwavering supporters of their granddaughters Mary Kate and Claire. Whether it was cheering from the stands at softball games or applauding proudly at dance recitals, they rarely missed a moment to celebrate their granddaughters' accomplishments. Big George is survived by his son, George McCluney III (Eileen) of Birmingham; granddaughter Mary Kate Galloway (John David) of Birmingham; granddaughter Claire Chesney (Ben) of Nashville; and great-granddaughter Mary Harper Galloway. A graveside service will be held at The National Cemetery in Montevallo, Alabama on December 30, 2025 at 10:15AM. His legacy lives on through the generations he loved so dearly. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire strength, loyalty, and love for family.
