Robert "Bob" T. Melcher passed peacefully on March 24, 2026, just four days after celebrating his 88th birthday, surrounded by the family that defined his life's work and greatest joy.
Born on March 20, 1938, in
Springfield, Massachusetts, to Josephine D'Amario Melcher and Earl Harris Melcher, Sr., Bob was the oldest of his siblings, Patricia Melcher Ullom, Earl H. Melcher, and Peggy Melcher Voight. From those early years, his story was not one of grand spectacle but was built in steady layers-through hard work and an unwavering devotion to the people he loved.
At just 17 years old, Bob entered the military, serving with pride in the Air Force and completing Airborne Class 9 as a paratrooper in 1957. That experience shaped the discipline and resilience he carried into every chapter that followed.
After his service, Bob returned home and began what would become a lifelong career in the grocery business, starting as a young produce clerk at Waldbaum's Food Mart in Springfield. It was work he genuinely loved, not just for the job itself, but for the people. The colleagues he met along the way became lifelong friends, and through dedication, loyalty, and an unshakable work ethic, Bob steadily rose through the ranks: from store manager to district manager, and eventually into the corporate headquarters under A&P Food Mart.
Yet if you asked him how he measured success, he would not point to titles or accomplishments. He would point to his family.
He was a father of seven-blessed with five daughters, Darci and her husband, Christopher, Patricia and her husband Nigel, Pamela and her husband, Christopher, Dianne and her husband, Thomas, and Angela and her husband, Dana; and two sons, Robert and his wife, Lindsey, and Darren, who all brought him deep comfort, pride, and unwavering affection. In time, that love only grew when he became a grandfather to fourteen and a great-grandfather to six. These were not just numbers to him, but a living legacy he valued with quiet pride. He celebrated their milestones as if they were his own.
Bob shared 66 years of marriage with his wife, Dianne (Davenport) Melcher, building a home where traditions mattered and where he took great pride in providing a constant sense of comfort and security for his family. He loved holidays filled with laughter, time spent at the grill, tending to his yard, and talking sports, especially golf. In retirement, he looked forward each year to golf trips to Florida with friends from his Food Mart days where they spent long sunny days golfing, including at his favorite course, Hawks Landing, and playing pitch well into the night. Those trips became even more meaningful when shared with his son, Darren-a reflection of how Bob's worlds of friendship and family often intertwined.
To many, Bob was an unassuming man. But to those who knew him best, he was steady, warm, and hilarious. The example he set reminds us that greatness is not found in the spectacular, but in the consistent- working hard without complaint and loving his family in a way that never asked for recognition but was always felt. In that way, his life was anything but ordinary, because it became the strong foundation that is now alive within the generations who carry him forward.
We wish to thank his many caregivers at Baystate Medical Center. Their compassion, kindness, and dedication brought the family immense comfort.
A committal service with Military Honors will take place on Friday, April 17th at 2pm at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in
Agawam, MA.
