Robert MILLING Obituary

MILLING, Rev. Robert T. Of Braintree, formerly of Dorchester and Roxbury, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness and unwavering faith, at the age of 81. Born on May 7, 1944, in Boston, Bob was a beacon of light and a pillar of strength for all who knew him. He was the cherished son of the late George and Mary (O'Keefe) Milling and a guiding figure for his siblings and their families.

In his early years, Robert demonstrated a passion for learning and a dedication to service. A proud graduate of Cathedral High School in the South End, he went on to earn his Master's Degree in Education from Boston State College. His thirst for knowledge and spiritual growth led him to Blessed John the 23rd Seminary in Weston, where he achieved a Masters of Divinity.

For over 35 years, Robert served as a devoted teacher in the Boston Public School system, touching the lives of countless students in Roxbury, Dorchester and Mission Hill. His commitment to education was matched only by his dedication to his faith. He entered the Deaconate Program for the Archdiocese of Boston and was ordained a permanent Deacon in 2000. His spiritual journey did not end there, in 2004, he was ordained as a priest of the Archdiocese. In his sacred role, Rev. Milling served the communities of St. Joseph Church in Holbrook, Our Lady of Assumption Church in Lynnfield, St. Peter Church in Plymouth and before retiring, St. Francis of Assisi Church in Braintree.

Robert was a devoted brother to Thomas P. Milling and his wife, Patricia of SC, Ellen M. Milling of Stoughton and John J. Milling of Stoughton. He was a beloved uncle to Pamela Milling, Laura Milling, Kimberly Gaston and Sandra Gaston. His role as a great-uncle to Robert Gaston and Nathan Elwood filled him with joy. The many dear cousins and friends who survive him will forever cherish his memory.

Beyond his professional and spiritual accomplishments, Robert was a man who relished the simple pleasures of life. He loved to travel, especially to Ireland and Europe, he took great delight in spending time with his family and friends, sharing in good meals and hearty laughter. Those who had the privilege of his company will remember his loving nature, his kind heart and his faith-filled spirit.

Rev. Robert T. Milling's journey through life was marked by an unwavering commitment to nurturing the minds and souls of those around him. He was a true servant of God and his community and his influence will continue to be felt by all who were blessed to know him. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we Celebrate a Life well-lived and a legacy that will endure through the many lives he touched.

Rev. Robert T. Milling will lie in state at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 850 Washington St., Braintree, on Tuesday, June 10, from 9:00 – 11:00 AM, where relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. John Sullivan

June 10, 2025

My name is John Sullivan. I am a retired Boston teacher, currently working part time at East Middle School in Braintree.
I first met Bob at a small elementary school in the Fields Corner section of Dorchester; the Benjamin Cushing School. The school closed soon after that and we parted ways. I did not see Bob until many years later. I was very surprised to see him in his newer role as a priest at St. Francis Church. My sincerest condolences. I was saddened to hear of his passing.
