Robert Mitchell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Eaton Funeral Home & Cremation Center - Main Chapel on Jan. 19, 2026.
Robert Ervin Mitchell, 83, of Sullivan, MO, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 16, 2026, at Missouri Baptist Hospital, St. Louis, MO. Born December 19, 1942 to Johnnie Thomas and Ava (Schafer) Mitchell, Robert was a man whose life was as rich and fulfilling as the soil of the family farm he grew up on near Strain, MO.
His early years were spent in the embrace of rural life, where he attended Strain School and later graduated from Sullivan High School in 1959. His education was not just academic; it was rooted in the values of hard work and dedication that he learned on the farm. These principles guided him as he ventured into St. Louis as a young man, taking a position at International Shoe Co. and later at Wagner Electric. It was there that Robert honed his skills as a machinist, a trade that would define his professional life for the next 22 years.
His career journey eventually led him to a small manufacturing company, CMI, where he continued to apply his expertise until retirement. Throughout his working years, Robert was also an active member of the International Association of Machinists, contributing to the community of craftsmen who shared his passion for precision and quality.
Robert's heart found its match when he met Georgia Horstman at "The Playgrounds" dance hall. The two were married on April 10, 1965, and together they built a life in Sullivan. Their family grew with the birth of their son, Johnnie, who was a source of joy and pride into Robert's life.
The farm life that Robert adored as a child remained a constant source of happiness throughout his life. He relished the time spent working with his cattle, taking leisurely rides on his 4-wheeler, and enjoying the simple companionship of his farm cat, Sweet Pea. His love for the land was a testament to his roots and the legacy he carried from his own father.
Robert and Georgia shared a passion for travel, exploring the vast landscapes of the United States together. They had a particular fondness for visiting Presidential Libraries and other historical sites, enriching their lives with the stories of the nation's past. Robert's love for the outdoors also extended to hunting, fishing, and, in his later years, the enjoyment of shooting pistols.
Perhaps the brightest moments in Robert's life were those spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He gave wisdom and joy to the younger generations, and his legacy will live on through the cherished memories they hold.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Georgia; his son, Johnnie Mitchell and wife, Kim of St. Charles, MO; his grandson, Kyle Thomas Mitchell of St. Louis, MO; his granddaughter, Sarah Walsh and husband, Collin of Maryland Heights, MO; beloved great-grandsons, Carter & Jordan; a sister, RuthAnn Williams of Sullivan, MO; a nephew, Billy Joe Manion of Sullivan, MO; and numerous other nieces, nephews and relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnnie and Ava Mitchell; and a nephew, Eddy Joe Manion.
Services will be 1:00 PM, Thursday, January 22, 2026 at the Eaton Funeral Home of Sullivan with Pastors Shane Jarvis and Kim Mitchell officiating. Burial will be at Schmidt Cemetery, Sullivan.
Visitation will be 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Thursday, January 22, 2026 at the funeral home prior to the service.
