Robert Moffitt Obituary

Published by Legacy on Aug. 1, 2025.
Robert was born to Esther and Andrew Moffitt in Odebolt, IA, on January 27, 1932. In 1957, he married the love of his life, Lois Meyer, and they enjoyed 68 years together. Robert "Bob" Moffitt was raised on a farm near Arthur, Iowa. Upon graduating from high school, he attended Iowa State University, where he majored in Landscape Architecture and Public Administration. While in college, he served as the President of Adelante Fraternity and served in ROTC. After college, Bob served in the US Army Signal Corps, spending time in Fort Huachuca and New Jersey. In 1957, Bob went to Chicago and was joined by Lois after their marriage. At 26, he became the Deputy Zoning Coordinator for Cook County. In 1960, Bob and Lois moved to Minneapolis, and in 1962, he joined the City of Minneapolis as a planner. His career thrived, and he retired in 1992 as the City Coordinator of Minneapolis. Bob maintained many lifelong friendships from his time with the city, still maintaining contact into his 90s. Bob and Lois had a love of travel. Visiting remote parts of the world and over 100 countries. They collected many beautiful works of art from around the world that they lovingly displayed in their home. They biked for many years, traveling to Ireland, France, western Canada, and around the United States. They also loved to ski, starting on their honeymoon and ending in their 70s. For a decade, they had a cabin in Fairplay, Colorado, where they spent time with visiting family and friends. Bob also loved photography, gardening, and woodworking. He built swing sets, fences, and decks. The backyard on Ewing Avenue was turned into an oasis full of hostas and trees rescued from ditches. It was the scene of many gatherings, including neighbors, family, and friends. Bob is survived by his wife Lois, his children Cindy (Tim), Sue (Rick), Jim (Lisa), and his sister Muriel Brower of Punta Gorda, Florida. He is also survived by his grandchildren (Collin, Annika, Lily, Timothy Jr, Madeline, Alec, Nick) and many nieces and nephews. He was close to his grandnieces and nephews, who lovingly called him "Uncle Grandpa". Bob was a loving father who provided his children with the necessary ingredients for a successful life. He had a strong desire to protect and nurture his family. This obituary was lovingly written by his children, who could benefit from their father's historical accuracy. There will be a celebration of life at Lake Harriet United Methodist Church, 4901 Chowen Avenue South, Minneapolis on Saturday, August 16. Visitation will start at 1:00 pm, the ceremony at 2:00 pm, and the reception at 3:00 pm. In place of flowers, donations can be made to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, Lake Harriet United Methodist Church, or NPR/PBS. Or go plant a tree!
