Robert Mueller Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by M. John Scanlan Funeral Home - Pompton Plains on Mar. 8, 2026.
Robert W. Mueller Sr., 99, of Pompton Plains, NJ passed away peacefully on March 5, 2026.

Born in Toledo, Ohio in 1926, he later moved to Fair Lawn, New Jersey and graduated from Eastside High School in Paterson. Upon graduation he joined the Navy and served in WW II as an electronics technician on the USS Okaloosa. Following military service, he went on to employment in the television industry, and had a long career as a broadcast engineer with the CBS Television Network. His job took him all over the world; he attended many political conventions and was privileged to bring his family to Florida to watch the launch of Apollo 11. Robert loved and took pride in his job, at one point building a TV transmitter in the basement of his house. He was also active in "ham" radio. His other passion was flying, and after obtaining his pilot's license, he eventually owned his own Cessna airplane. Robert and his wife Helen particularly enjoyed flying to Martha's Vineyard. He was also one of the "Soup Dudes", a group of pilots who enjoyed meeting regularly at a local diner.

Robert was pre-deceased by his beloved wife, Helen, of almost 70 years; his brother William Mueller and sister Marilyn Orrick. He is survived by his six sons, Robert Jr. (Camille), William (Michele), James (Lorna), Glenn (Monica), Kevin, and Mark (Tracey); his sister Diane Perry; eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Donations to the First Reformed Church of Pompton Plains in lieu of flowers are appreciated. Funeral services are private.
