Robert Nevin Obituary

Nevin, Robert D. "Prof"
CLIFTON PARK - Robert D. ""Prof"" Nevin, 87, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at Ellis Hospital, with his daughter by his side.
Robert was born on February 16, 1936, in Ithaca, N.Y. to the late F. Reese and Emma (Dodson) Nevin. When he was a young child, Robert's family moved to Plattsburgh where he spent his childhood and found his favorite spot on earth, Lake Champlain. He graduated from Manlius Pebble Hill School and later earned his bachelor's degree in education from SUNY Oswego. Robert went on to have a long and rewarding career as an industrial arts and shop teacher at Shenendehowa High School, where he taught for over 38 years. He was a legend at Shen where he was able to help guide so many students onto successful paths in life.
Known affectionately as ""Prof"" to friends and colleagues, he never stopped his teaching. He adored his grandson and never missed a sporting game or event. During basketball season, Prof could be found in his spot, directly behind the bench, giving his own pointers and tips to the team. Prof liked to give people nicknames, that often only made sense to him, but he used them affectionately with those he cared about.
Robert always enjoyed being outdoors and particularly loved camping on Valcour Island and at Lewey Lake. He loved his MFG motorboat and canoeing. Robert's free time was spent restoring his antique cars, especially his beloved Model A Ford. He was a member of the Adirondack A's, Upstate New York Early Ford V-8 Car Club, and the Hudson Mohawk Chapter of ATHS Truck Club. Robert also enjoyed working with his hands, and was a skilled woodworker, proudly making many wooden toys for his grandson. He also loved working on the Adirondack A's Model A project restorations. Robert was also a true friend of all animals and always encouraged adopting pets from a shelter.
Robert is survived by his daughter, Carol Schnitzer, and her husband Karl; his grandson, Andrew Schnitzer; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Katherine (Robert) Sweeney; and his four-legged friend, Little Gray. He is also survived by one niece and six nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Anne Micklos Nevin.
The family would like to thank the staff of Judson Meadows Assisted Living for providing excellent care to Robert for the past six months.
Services will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Robert's name to the Animal Protective Foundation, 53 Maple Ave., Glenville, NY, 12302 or to an animal shelter of your choice.
With confidence, the family has placed their trust in the loving care of the Townley & Wheeler Funeral Home of Ballston Lake, and they encourage you to view Robert's Book of Memories at www.TownleyWheelerFH.com.

Prof was one of a kind; never knew what joke he'd say or his nickname for you. I always enjoyed visiting his classroom during my senior year at Shen when I had no class. I was always welcomed and he'd say to me, "What have to done today Wyckoff?" Prof was my drivers ed instructor and what was an adventure each session. I appreciate Prof attending our classmates get together when I visited the are way back in 1981. Prof will be missed my many many people.

Prof Nevin will always be a priceless legend at Shenendehowa High School. When people made fun of me and judged me falsely, Prof always gave me the correct advice as to how to deal with such people. He was brutally honest, funny, and was never afraid to speak up for what was right. Whenever my assignments were less than excellent, he always motivated me and encouraged me to persevere and aim for higher grades. Several years ago, my NY license plates became PROFNEVN as a tribute to Prof. He helped me to smile and laugh whenever I had bad days. Thank you Prof!!

Prof's ability to lovingly bond with students was a lifelong lesson to me. His annual Driver Ed class was legend... Students forever clamoring to get into his class. His teachings and advice still echo in my mind some 50 years later (I am Class of '72). Last saw him at Home Depot in Clifton Park years ago... Prof's life is an example to all of us!

We kept in touch through the years visiting each time I was in town. He took me for a ride through Clifton Park in his antique Ford while admiring my restored Edsel on our return.
Prof was one of my favorite teachers. Brad Mincher
