Robert Edwin Nicolay

With deep sorrow, the family of Robert Edwin Nicolay, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and respected businessman, announce his passing. Robert died peacefully at home on October 17, 2024, at age 94, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication to his community. Robert, a Certified Public Accountant, was a retired executive of Exxon/Mobil Corporation with a career spanning 34-years covering a broad area of assignments. Following his career at Exxon/Mobil, he went into management consulting and was recruited as Vice-President of American Original Corp., managing its successful turnaround and sale. Robert served during the Korean War as a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corp, completing his tour of duty as a member of Marine Barracks-Washington, D.C., entrusted to fulfill special ceremonial duties. Robert was also a dedicated volunteer, providing expertise to the Baltimore Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, serving on the Board of Directors as Treasurer and earning the prestigious Silver Beaver award. He also contributed significantly to the Board of Directors of the Junior Achievement of Baltimore and the John L. Deaton Medical Center. In 2003, Robert was appointed by Governor Robert L. Ehrlich to the Maryland Health Care Commission, serving with distinction. Following the passing of his beloved wife of 53-years, Robert founded the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation, a testament to his enduring commitment to Joanna's memory advocating for melanoma and skin cancer prevention, detection care and cure. In 2010, Robert married Nancy A. Pedersen, his loving wife, who survives him. Robert is also survived by his son, Robert Keith Nicolay, and daughter, Denise Linn Safko and her husband Gregory. He was a proud grandfather to Trevor M. Safko, his wife Ania, and Robert P. Safko, and cherished great-grandfather to Zoë Safko, and caring uncle to his nieces and nephews. The family requests that donations be made to a charity of choice in Robert's honor. A private memorial service will be in March 2025.
