Robert Joseph O’Connor, age 83, of Badger, IA, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Thursday, February 6, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. His spirit is commended into the hands of his Savior. Memorial services will be held at 4:00 PM on Friday, February 21, 2025, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, 239 N. 11th Street – Fort Dodge, with Pastor Jim McColley officiating. Memorials may be directed to the family. Arrangements are with Historic Bruce Funeral Home of Fort Dodge.
Robert was born on February 23, 1941, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of Walter and Flora (Jones) O’Connor. He graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High in 1959 and continued his education at Iowa State University, earning a Master of Education degree. On June 9th, 1967, Robert married his beloved wife Mary Ellen (Ahlrichs) O'Connor in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Together, they raised three children: Dawn, Chad, and Cory in Badger, Iowa, where they made their home for over 55 years.
A dedicated worker, Robert spent several years as a forklift operator at Mead Container. Following the plant’s closure, he returned to school to become a behavioral disorder teacher, a role he cherished for nearly 40 years and that impacted the lives of countless students and families.
Robert and his wife were dedicated foster parents and hosts to international students over the years. In his free time, he also enjoyed golfing, Tae Kwon Do (Black Belt), working on family cars, umpiring softball, coaching, and cheering the students and staff of Fort Dodge area schools. Widely known for his outgoing personality, he was a cherished friend and mentor to many.
Robert is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Ellen, their three children: Dawn (Richard Pancione) O’Connor, Chad (Dorothy) O'Connor, and Cory (Rachel) O'Connor; 10 grandchildren: Jordan Krell, Conor Krell, Ashton Evans, Carsten O'Connor, Colin O'Connor, Brendan O'Connor, Kendal O'Connor, Reagan O'Connor, Ava O'Connor, and Carter O'Connor; brother Michael O’Connor along with many in-laws, nephews, and nieces.
He is preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law as well as 10 brothers and sisters.
Robert will be remembered for his incredible work ethic, his unwavering devotion to his family, and willingness to help anyone at any time. He leaves behind a lasting legacy of love, kindness, and commitment.
A funeral and celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
