Robert Oberbrunner Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sunset Options Funerals & Cremations Inc. on Dec. 7, 2025.
Robert "Bob" John Oberbrunner, the youngest son of the late Emily (née Pytlik) and Roche Oberbrunner, is reunited in spirit with his brother Tony (Teri) and beloved canine companion Brownie. He leaves behind innumerable people who loved him dearly-and who will forever miss his quick wit and adventurous spark-including his sisters Mary (the late Gerald) Menting and Jane (Dan) Heath; his nieces Ruth, Jhennifer, Kathryn, and Mallory (Jessie); his nephews Stephen (Virginia) and Joseph (Heather); and his great-nieces and great-nephews Cate, Nolan, Abbie, and Rory. He is further survived by quite an extended family and an abundance of cherished friends. He was born in Milwaukee and graduated from Pio Nono (now Thomas More) high school. As a youth, Bob found happiness through Boy Scouts, where it instilled a lifelong love of hunting and the outdoors. Bob retired from a long career as a painter for Milwaukee Public Schools. He was also a Veteran and served as a medic in the United States Army, where he had postings in both Colorado and Alaska. Never one to sit still for long, Bob filled his days with activity and adventure. An avid cyclist, he rode at least one day every week-rain or shine (or snow)-often alongside his good friend Gene. He was an enthusiastic regular in the Riverwest 24 bike race (he has the tattoo to prove it), the Milwaukee Santa Cycle Rampage, and countless other cycling events over the years. His love of two wheels even carried him on cycling tours through Amsterdam and France. Bob also found happiness on the water. A devoted sailor with the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center, he spent countless memorable hours at the helm of his pride and joy, "Wild Thing". Highlights of his sailing adventures include meeting King Juan Carlos of Spain at a sailing race and also taking first place in the 1992 Governor's Sailing Regatta with his good friend Dan Breilmeier. Happy trails, Robbie! Wishing you a safe journey with fair winds and following seas. Per his request, no formal services will be held. A memorial gathering will be announced at a later date, when family and friends will come together to celebrate Bob's big heart, adventurous spirit, and the wonderfully full life he lived. I was new to sailing when I met Bob at MCSC and he was very generous with sharing his considerable sailing knowledge with a newbie. I´m sure that there are many people who had memorable experiences with Bob on the water. I was crewing with him in 30+ knots when his original Star wooden mast snapped 15 ft from the top as he went hard over to avoid a power boat and we had to cut out the sails to regain control. He was also good company over a beer or just hanging out by the water. I left the state and fell out of touch with Bob which is my loss.

To a good soul and former fellow East Sider whom I met sailing and bicycling. He was so proud of his boat. It wasn't sailing season but he showed me it parked on a trailer by his east side apartment.
One day I happened to run into him at Colectivo (Alterra at the time) and it was an especially horrible weather day but I was still determined to go sailing. He went to his truck and gave me his HH heavy waterproof sailing jacket--to keep. And I did for many years. We both laughed about it since it had to be at least three times too big for me!
He would also mention that he saw my picture on the wall of the John Marshall H.S. Sports Hall of Fame when he was painting in summer. We would also get a laugh out of that too!
As he moved away from the east side, we became more distant but in a recent meeting, I felt he seemed to be in a good place with retirement. (Aren't we all!)
So with the wind gently at your back, sail and bike on, My Friend!

Dear Oberbrunner Family,
You are deeply in my heart as I have learned of Rob´s passing. His tender heart, warm smile, and strength of character come easily to mind.
He is a very special part of a most loving and supportive family.
Love, Susie Krause and Harvey Taylor
