Robert Jose Ornelas
April 14, 1949 – January 18, 2026
Robert Jose Ornelas passed away on January 18, 2026, in
Manteca, California, at the age of 76. He was born on April 14, 1949, in
Palo Alto, California, and spent his life devoted to his family, friends, and the simple joys that brought people together. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Jessie Ornelas; his son, Ned Darby; twin grandbabies, Cambrie and Taylor Thrash; and his brothers, Manuel, Richard, and Vincent Ornelas.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sue Ornelas, with whom he shared a loving marriage since May 5, 1988, after meeting in 1985. Together they built a life centered on love, family, travel, and togetherness. Robert is also survived by his children: Jeannine Thrash (Randy) of Granite Bay, Michelle Ornelas of Sacramento, Donald Darby of Washington, and Bryan Darby (Tiffany) of Ripon. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Ally (Ryan), Hannah (Dominick), Garrett, D.J., Landon, Aiden, Guin, Logan, Jaxson, and Justus, and a cherished great-grandfather to 4 and many future grandbabies. He is also survived by his sister, Irma Contreras of Visalia.
Robert retired in December 2015, and Sue followed in retirement in January 2016. Retirement allowed them to enjoy what they loved most-traveling together, including frequent and memorable trips to Disneyland, Yosemite, Pismo Beach, as well as several cruises.
An avid sports fan, Robert, proudly supported the 49ers, Giants, and the Chicago Bears. He enjoyed gambling and playing the daily lotto and was thrilled when he hit the Fantasy 5 in 2021. Robert was an excellent pool player, rarely being defeated in a game. He loved to dance and was always ready for a good party. Above all, Robert treasured being surrounded by family and friends and was happiest when he and Sue were together. They were truly each other's soul mates; attached to the hip, wherever they went, they went together.
A Celebration of Life for Robert will be held Saturday, February 7, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at P.L. Fry & Son Funeral Home, 290 N. Union Rd.,
