Robert McMasters Patton, a man whose life was marked by dedication, integrity, and service, passed away on March 16, 2026, in Carlisle at the age of 95. Robert was born on Tuesday, August 19, 1930, in Paoli to the late James Brainerd Patton and Catharine (Mateer) Patton. Robert was the widower of Verna Agnes (Darnell) Patton, whom he married on May 31, 1952, and who passed away on November 15, 2024. In addition to his parents and wife, Robert is preceded in death by his siblings—James Patton, John Patton, Merieda Van Auken, Richard Patton, Polly Blackburn, and Suzanne Dalton.
Robert's survivors include his five children: R. Alan Patton of Orwigsburg; Karen Stoner and her husband Jerry of Mechanicsburg; Sharon Rider and her husband Gary of Boiling Springs; Craig Patton and his wife Tracy of Carlisle; Brian Patton and his wife Jocelyn of Las Vegas, Nevada; his thirteen grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren (and counting) and one great-great-grandchild; his brother, Michael Patton and wife Catherine; and several nieces and nephews.
A graduate of Tredyffrin/East High School, Robert answered the call of duty, serving his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. His patriotism and sense of responsibility extended beyond his military service. Professionally, Robert devoted many years as a sales representative with the Deluxe Corporation. His committed work ethic and personable approach earned him the distinction of having 97% of the banks in his territory as valued clients. Robert’s faith was important in his life. For over 58 years, he was a devoted member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Mechanicsburg. His participation within the church included—serving as an usher, a lay minister, a certified communion giver, and helping with their bookwork. This steadfast commitment reflected the generous and compassionate nature that defined him.
Beyond his professional and spiritual endeavors, Robert's life contained diverse interests and commitments. He was a coach of Little League Baseball, a dedicated volunteer firefighter, even serving as an assistant fire chief and ambulance driver. He enjoyed golfing, winning several tournaments, which started back in his youth, when he caddied. Robert & his wife Verna, traveled extensively, exploring continents and cultures across Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and many other countries.
Robert enjoyed musicals and plays, often attending Broadway shows with his wife, Verna, and grandchildren. Robert’s journey through life was a testament to his enduring commitment to family, country, and community.
All are welcome to join Robert's family at his visitation on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, from 10:30 a.m.to 11:00 a.m. with a funeral service beginning at 11:00 a.m., all at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 8 East Keller Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055. Robert's family invites everyone for a time of food and fellowship at the church immediately following the service. Burial will follow the reception in Rolling Green Cemetery in Camp Hill.
