Robert Phelps Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home on Mar. 5, 2026.
Robert Allen Phelps was born on April 29, 1947 and passed on March 4, 2025 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House, Manhattan Kansas.

Bob was a lifelong resident of Manhattan and was employed by the United States Postal Service.

He was preceded in death by his parents Mary and Kenneth Phelps and his brother Harry.

He is survived by his sister-in-law Jeanne and his nieces and nephews Mary & Dana, Leslie, Evan, Jake, Darren & Cassie, Emma, Grace, and Finn.

"Uncle Bob" found great joy in family events and holidays! He made a habit to arrive with armloads of food and gifts – he especially liked bringing giant stuffed animals for all the kids, coolers of fancy meats for everyone, always sporting a new suit jacket and hat for himself. Bob was attentive and kind. If he noticed that anyone needed anything, he would happily be the one to help it be done. His bighearted and boisterous presence will be missed dearly whenever we gather as a family!

Bob's absence will also be felt by the many friends he made over the years who enjoyed his creative tailgate fare at Kansas State University football games. Bob loved K-State football, never missing a home game in over 40 years. He was a Wildcat fan through and through. He was so much looking forward to the 2026 season – he will surely be there in spirit manning his grill and cheering the Cats to victory.

Our family thanks all the many friends and caretakers who stepped up to help and care for Bob as his health declined. We appreciate everything you did! A special thanks to Don Bonewitz and Howard Jensen. Thanks also to Bob's friends at El Patron and El Tapitio Mexican restaurants in Manhattan - you kept him well fed with his favorite foods and helped in so many other ways.

Bob will be buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Eureka Kansas where he will rest next to several generations of his ancestors. Friends who wish to honor Bob are encouraged to donate to the Kansas State University Ahearn Fund in his memory. Contributions may be sent in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.
